    Long gun transportation questions

Since the Long Gun open carry was banned on 1/1/13, I wonder do we have to lock up our long guns in a Hard case when we are transporting our long guns? and do we have to lock up our long guns in a hard case when we transporting them from a place ( e.g home, shop, range) to our car?
How about school grounds? Does college count as "school ground" in California? Do i need to lock up my Long guns in a locked container when i park my car at college/University?
The new law is confusing me..
    Thank you very much.

    Edit --
All of the situation i have mention above are long guns (rifles, Shotguns) that are UNLOADED.

[ETA added section (i) - loaded is punished more severely than just possession, but possession is also illegal.]

Best you do not bring your long guns or ammo onto school property, and yes, college/university is definitely included. That includes locked in your car. Park off-campus if you must keep your guns in your car.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

I wonder if anyone will ever challenge the student housing aspect of this law. Seems to be a violation of your right to have a loaded weapon in your home. Just because its a student home shouldn't matter. They are alduts

yes I agree its against their rights but until they do away with the gun free school zones they have to abid by the law or be turned into a criminal IIRC texas is trying to pass a law to let college students carry on campus but I doubt we in CA will ever see a bill like that be introduced
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

The law above is referring to a LOADED long gun, how about an UNLOADED long gun in my truck? Am i legal to have an unloaded long gun in a trunk?
I am not looking for trouble, but I just want to have some protections while i travel around

You even quote my ETA where I note I added unloaded guns ...

ON COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY CAMPUS or school property, guns will get you a felony conviction; longer sentence if loaded. If you ever get LTC, guns listed on that license are exempt. (That's from criminal charges - administrative action against students/faculty/staff is different.)

OTHER THAN ON CAMPUS and a few other places, legal to carry around a long gun, unloaded, in your vehicle.

Alright, now i get it. Better not to have anything related to firearms in campus.
