California unable to disarm 19,700 felons and mentally ill people [L.A. Times]

Budget cuts prevent the state from seizing firearms owned by thousands of felons:

Apparently, the good news is that the APPS works well - thousands of gun-owning felons have been identified. The bad news: not enough dough in Sacramento coffers to have DOJ cops to go around and confiscate their firearms.

So what's the suggested solution by some lawmakers? Taxing law-abiding gun owners, of course.

Why worry about 20,000 felons / unstable people with guns?

Here in LA we have far more unlicensed drivers than that, and it is official policy of LAPD to allow people to drive without a license.

It's obvious to me that all the discussion of gun control has nothing whatsoever to do with public safety. If they cared at all about public safety, they would seize vehicles of unlicensed drivers, they would take guns away from felons, and they would lock up violent felons. California apparently does none of those things, but they sure are eager to take away your AR-15s and magazines.

we lack money to fund significant actions such as removing guns from felons and the mentally ill. yet law makers waste all this money proposing more useless gun laws. these politicians sure know how to make themselves look worst and worst each day...

Any chance we could get a fund together to round up the politicians?

I think they are doing more harm...

          G DAMN IT!

          This is outrageous!

F'in 5-cent tax on each bullet!?

Bullets cost about 20-cents each and they want to tax 5-cents on that!?

250-rounds a month, to stay sharp, will cost an additional $12.50???

Are we taxing extra taxes on alcohol to cover the resources of used in DUI check points, drunk driving incidents??

          WTF is going on...

Founding Fathers had an idea that worked when they didn't have money. They didn't have enough money for an army, so they used the resources of the individual citizens. They created a militia using the citizens' arms.

They want to take away the guns from the illegals, they can do that, issue the rest of is legals CCW's and well drop the crime rate for them

EDIT: I don't mean to go be a vigilante. I meant, that places like Florida and Virginia have seen reduced crime rates since they introduced CCW's.

Someone should explain to these fools that taxes applied for general welfare & public safety programs to marriage licenses have been struck down repeatedly by both state & federal courts, being a fundamental right and all...

This story is cover for SB 140.

They're looking to use the DROS surplus to:

[a] make NRA's DROS case difficult to win,
[b] justify keeping DROS fees at current levels, perhaps higher,
[c] acquire data for future bills and to defend against lawsuits assuming intermediate scrutiny.

SB 140, an urgency bill, is a key item for the opposition.

I particularly like what the bullet tax is going to fund. Who wants to bet general tax fund? Spend on childrens ANYTHING indeed.

All bills in CA no matter how well written or intended, always have the clause that funds generated by it can always be used for the general fund.

                    Oh I know.

That's why I'm calling BS on this bullet tax.

Not to mention it'll fund the economy somewhere else. I can already see my partner and I making monthly trips to Oregon to buy ammunition, visit friends/family and other shopping.

Screw it. Even if it ends up costing the difference in gas, I won't pay a tax like that on principle. I can support my LGS on other purchases.

Easy solution. They should make it illegal for felons and mentally ill people to own guns. Oh wait.........

                          It's a feel good measure.

They'll pass all these farking laws, but then won't bother to spend the money to enforce them.

Not to mention people seem to like to pull the "it doesn't affect me" ticket.

There's currently a trend going in PA, for example, where they have a large group that supports an "assault weapons" ban. You want to know why?

It doesn't affect the MILLIONS of hunters in the state. You want to know why THAT is?

You cannot hunt in Pennsylvania with semi-automatic rifles. Therefore a ban on them will not affect a good number of the hunting population. -_-

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

What was his misdemeanor? Was he on parole?
