I contacted all of my representatives again and decided to write a letter to Sen. Feinstein with copies to other representatives. I think we should contact them all (and often), regardless of their views. Silence is the worst option, in my view.
Senator,
I've been a tax paying California resident for over 35 years. I am also a gun owner and a firm supporter of my Constitutionally identified right to bear arms. I understand the reaction to recent events but find it appalling that you now find it necessary to push gun control. If you are not being opportunistic, then why all of the silence beforehand? This is not relevant other than for you to understand how at least one voter sees it.
I strongly urge you to refrain from pushing for such severe infringement on my right to bear arms; remember the Constitution was passed to form the Government, not to form the People. The Bill of Rights is a reminder to the Government being formed of who we are as the People; its not a list of rights granted by the Government and therefore its not in the Government's power to take away. The Constitution clearly states, "shall not infringe". Think for a moment the collective intellect and the careful consideration of the men that crafted our Constitution, the same Constitution that you swore to uphold and protect, and ask yourself if "shall not infringe" means anything other than that.
Our founders surely considered that a people with such freedoms would produce tragedies from time to time, however, still firmly agreed and memorialized that we as individuals have certain unalienable rights, including the right to bear arms. They surely concluded that such rights weighed in the presence of the risks, were absolutely and certainly necessary. I believe that necessity exists today just as it did over 200 years ago.
I believe that the actions you are supporting are the exact type of tyranny that the second amendment protects law abiding citizens against. With respect, I urge you to rethink your proposals.
