Coffee with Senator Jim Beall in Cupertino. Sat Jan 26th 9-10:30AM

Senator Jim Beall is historically anti-gun. I received an email inviting me to coffee with him at:

    Roasted Coffee Bean
    19110A Stevens Creek Blvd
    Cupertino, CA 95104

    Saturday January 26th
    9-10:30AM

I urge you all to shave, dress nice, and show up to tell him you vote and will not vote for anyone who passes stricter gun laws. Express how you will rally up as many people as you can to vote AGAINST him if he continues to support stricter gun control.

    Be polite.
    Leave the camo at home.
    Smile
Be concise, to the point, but firm in your views

        Jim Beall not our friend.

Jm Beall will vote for all gun restrictions.

If they perceive you as being "confrontational", they may just walk out, especially on this issue.

I can't attend this, if I did this is what I would say to him.

        Sen Beall.(respect the office)

The Second amendment wasn't recognized by the federal courts as an individual right binding on state and local governments until the 2010 MacDonald decision.

While the scope of the second amendment is still being fleshed out in the courts, the following is supposed to be settled law:

        1. We have a right to arm ourselves with functional common arms for self defense in "non-sensitive zones".'

        2. Gun restrictions on felons and the mentally ill are constitutional, but broad bans and/or burdens on the general public aren't.

3..There are numerous federal civil rights lawsuits filed all over the country on second amendment issues that are in the appeal level now and probably will be heard in the US Supreme court within the next 18 to 36 months.

Wouldn't the wise course of action on future California gun laws be to hold off on any new gun laws until we have more guidance from the US Supreme court as to how broad the scope of the second amendment is?

Our state has so many problems, our economy has imploded, shouldn't we be focusing on improving our business climate so that we can regrow our economy?

What happened in Sandy hook as horrible and right now I bet those gun toting Republicans will give in on serious improvements for our mental health care system in order to save their guns.

If failure to support fixing our mental health care system was equated with being anti-gun, I bet you could build a massive consensus to fix things now.

When Jim Beall was a Santa Clara county supervisor, public health was something he cared about btw guys.

Someone should go, have someone else record it on their iPhone or something, pretend to be an anti and ask if he'd support confiscation, just to get him on the record.

If his first response to being confronted on his record is to cut and run, then every public event should be peppered with polite but confrontational pro gunners.

If he seldom comes in contact with his constituency, and walks away from scheduled town halls, there will be an effect of appearing disconnected, unreachable, or aloof. None of that helps him get reelected.

I'll try to be there this Saturday.
I'd like to see if I could talk to him and if he is willing to listen to my point of view. Depending on situation I'll try to talk about:
                1. SB 53 - large quantities of ammunition are needed for training. Nobody wants gun owners to be poorly trained, right?
                2. SB 47 - these rifles are for sportsman, not for crime.
                3. General support for firearms training - we need more ranges.
                4. LTC reform.

I do not want to be too confrontational. I want to see if he can hear my arguments.

Any suggestions about what else I could/should try?

He doesn't care what you think.

He knows his constituency will support him just because he has a D next his name on the ballot.

I have no illusions about how much he would change for me

I talked to the Jim Beall today.
I explained to him why SB53 and SB47 are misguided. The main point was that armed citizens need to practice with firearms to be safe with them and limitations on ammunition sales will only make it more difficult to practice. Criminal do not need to buy ammo in large quantities so it will not really target them. He seem to agree with me on that. I also brought to his attention limited capacity of our shooting ranges. I told him that we need to expand existing ranges because more people own firearms and they need to train with them for safety reasons. He said that he was shooting in Coyote Creek club before and appreciates it. He asked if I support better mental health screening and my response was that I do believe we should prevent mentally unstable from buying guns, but this can be easily misuse as a political tool because it is too easy to declare someone mentally unstable and too difficult to prove otherwise. He did appreciate this point too. He also asked me if I would support ban on "high capacity" magazines. I told him that this issue is not relevant to California because we already have a ban on sales of these, and I also explained to him that magazine size issue is not real because it takes about a second to reload. All this time two cops were standing next to us and listening. They didn't say anything, but I could tell by their body language that they did support what I was saying.
Overall he did appear to be reasonable and claimed that he would listen to arguments. He did not know details of the latest gun bills but mentioned that there are a lot of them coming and he will look at them when they are ready. I hope that he MAY be persuaded by a reasonable argument and it is important for us to be patient.

They need to hear these common sense statements from reasonable people in their districts. May not immediately affect the vote but it does put a face on the argument when presented in committee and on the floor, which in turn gives the lobbyists backing our positions a stronger voice. Good work!

This is probably one of the most important things we can do right now. We do not need to appear as the grabbers have us pictured and that being
                              cannibalistic, baby killers.

Thank you for your deportment and what you have done, Vlad!
I've spent most of my money on guns, motorcycles and beer....... The rest I just wasted.
