A flash hider is a 'feature'.
One is concerned about 'features' when one's semi-automatic centerfire rifle has a 'detachable magazine'.
A rifle with a magazine lock (bullet button) does not have a 'detachable magazine'.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good! -

i was at Lytle creek shooting range today. i own a M1A made in 1983. it came from the factory with a M 14 style flash hider. i was told i could not shoot this rifle without the CA muzzle brake installed. he was very nice to me and let me shoot 10 rounds before i had to put it away. it just does not seem right.Comment

If you registered as a RAW before the CA Deadline, it's perfectly legal for you to take it out there and shoot it.
If you didn't register it, by all means, remove the factory flash hider, and attach a legal muzzle brake. Removing Original flash suppressor makes the M1A featureless, and it doesn't have to be registered as a RAW. You can get the Springfield muzzle brake in a kit from Springfield comes with a tool to remove and replace the locknut and plastic case for about $100.
Or, you can find the Springfield muzzle brake on Amazon or eBay by itself for $40-$50.
If you get the muzzle brake alone, and need to use the Springfield tool, I can let you use mine. Just PM me, and we can meet up.Comment

Didn't we already go over this days (weeks?) ago? You asked was your rifle legal and it was clearly stated not with the flash hider on it. Several suggestions on legal replacements were made and I said you should remove the flash hider now.i was at Lytle creek shooting range today. i own a M1A made in 1983. it came from the factory with a M 14 style flash hider. i was told i could not shoot this rifle without the CA muzzle brake installed. he was very nice to me and let me shoot 10 rounds before i had to put it away. it just does not seem right.
Then you took it today to the range?
