saw that on the Dan Wesson forum, it seems like a pretty straightforward explanation.

This is an excellent resource to share with non-gun friends.

However, I take issue with the statement that the M-16 rifle "can fire about 880 rounds per minute." You see it all the time in the media that a weapon is capable of this sort of thing, and it's usually an attempt to show how dangerous these rifles are. (Unquestioned is whether more unaimed rounds fired are actually more dangerous or less dangerous to the intended target, but let's leave that aside for now).

My point is that they are quoting 'RATE OF FIRE' (how fast the action cycles), but this does NOT mean that you can really fire that many rounds in a minute. The media is never called out on this. There's a reason why belt-fed fully-auto machine guns are either water-cooled or have swappable barrels....stuff gets HOT. You get cook-offs and then things start melting. Besides, we don't have 800-round magazines. It's not physically possible for someone to actually fire 800 rounds from a standard military M-16 in one minute, and certainly impossible for a semi-auto civilian AR15 to do it.

We should not let the media get away with this. We need to correct them whenever we see it. It's like saying that your sports car is capable of achieving speeds of 500 miles an hour. OK, maybe it can spin the wheels that fast, but if your gas tank only holds 4 gallons, so there is no way you are going to travel 500 miles in that car in one hour, plus the fact that your tires might burn off long before you get there. Not a perfect analogy, but you see what I mean.

Hopefully some of the uneducated crowd will take the time to read it.

That's a good tool. Is there an equally succinct tool somewhere addressing the 2nd Amendment? It's not for militias, etc...

I'd also ask if an AR15 is such a devastating killing machine that shoots through walls like paper, why is it that all the officers involved in school hostage drills carry them when clearing the buildings? Wouldn't that endanger all those students still hiding in the classrooms?

Penn and Teller explain it very well in this vid. It's a mega-dupe, but one of my favorites....and you asked......

                            Is there anything similar post-Heller/McDonald?
