Stolen gun returned by the FBI question

    so here's the story:

My gun was stolen 12 years ago. I reported it to the police department, gathered all the paperwork i had on it and filed it in my gun file. Have not heard anything about it till this January.

I get a call from a lady at the FBI asking if i want my gun back. She said i will have to have paperwork for it (which i promptly got out of my gun file) and gives me a number to call. After several calls and conversations i am told by a Special Agent to show up at their office in Santa Ana to pick it up. On Tuesday i show up and they hand me the gun. It was tied down to a box, all in black fingerprint powder, had a cork in the barrel at both ends. It even had a Bianchi holster (probably mine but i don't remember it).

From my conversations this is what i was able to put together, since they would not divulge any details:
They found the gun in a house that they searched during a drug bust, 9 years ago. The gun was not used in any shooting that they know of. it has been locked up in their vault since then as evidence in the case.

I asked the agent if it was "safe" for me to have it and he said that if they recover a casing from it in an investigation they might look me up again. I was given a signed form that it was returned to me and that's it.

    So here's the question:

should it keep it, shoot it and love it?
    or
should i sell it and get another one?

    some notes:

The gun is in very good condition after a wipe down to remove the black powdery stuff, the barrel looks great, functions flawlessly, i bet it shoots great too still. I am sure that after i really clean it, it will be as new again and noone will tell a difference.

This was my first gun that i purchased and shot, so there is an emotional attachment there plus the history that it now has. I even have the first 5 casings from the first time i shot it (it's a .357 magnum revolver, Ruger GP100, 3" stainless, the ones people have been talking about how great they are, rare and desirable).

I am worried that some police database has the serial number still showing as stolen and if i am stopped with it i might be in trouble. Even trough i have all the paperwork for it, it will still be $$$ and frustrations to prove it.

Any advice on what to do here will be appreciated as always

They asked if i had them before the ban. I told them no, but they where california legal built and purchased after the ban. I mentioned that the magazine was pinned and other "california" features where on it, and that i had to load them from the top.
There where 2 agents and the younger was asking this.

1 more thing: they asked "how many" rifles i had, so they did not know or maybe the guy did not read the report?????

I don't think you should keep it. Your best bet is to give it to me. I'll even drive out to your FFL to PPT it and I'll pay the fees.

I would keep it...Its not too often that someone has their gun stolen 12 years ago that was used by drug dealers and then returned by the FBI!!!!I think its a great conversational piece and now it has some sort of sentimental value....Although it may have killed someone, lol....

                        Keep that gun.
                        It has a interesting history.
Have you any idea how few people ever get back what was stolen?

It did not kill anyone that they know, i specifically asked that question. In fact that is my concern, is that they find some casings, 12 years from now, and then involve me in their case.

I was thinking that if i end up keeping it (in case HAWK1 does not come trough) that i will send it to Ruger to be serviced and fitted with a new barrel ($250 according to their price list).

The government knows what, where and how... always. They know more about us than we do sometimes.

The history here is certainly great, but i am still worried that in the future it will come back to bite me.
