    Quickie Jefferson quote circa 1785

I am ripping this right off of Shotgun News and I'm sure they won't mind--god bless 'em.

Thomas Jefferson to Peter Carr, 1785, 8:407, Julian P Boyd, ed., 1950

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks."

RANT WARNING: Don't read unless you're bored, and have re-read the quote above until the words "I advise the gun" are burned into your brain......

For a couple of reasons this quote hit me like a ton of bricks. I played soccer for twenty years, baseball for ten years, a lot of softball, a little basketball, ran track in high school, no one can beat me in ping-pong, love racquetball, will shoot pool if I don't smell any sharks, and occasionally get mean on a tennis court. But gosh darn (calguns approved terminology) if I don't prefer a good day shooting over any of the above. It's physical and it requires concentration and an understanding of mechanical technology. A rifleman does not exist in the 21st century without a decent grasp of the laws of physics either. Accurate rifleman will also need some small mathematical sophistication.

Gosh darn again if they weren't shooting BALL ammo back then. A little linguistic irony. I hope you saw the "speedloaders" they used back then on the outdoor channel the other night. A piece of wood worn around the neck with eight holes to store ammo.

Well, everybody I know is obsessed with games played with a ball. I have to admit I was delighted that Osama's attacks took a little attention away from the prancing sport celebrities in tight pants--Pat Tillman the heroic exception--I was hoping for a bigger awakening and now we're right back to stadium ball play and American Idol. There is no American hero with a gun anymore--americans with guns just go nuts and do ***** spree killings at school, work, home, etc......guess I'll just count the days until I can buy a "Rambo" dvd......or count the days till the 2nd amend is just a memory.........

    Later!! Rant out.

I would if it wasn't illegal.
Look at the tyranny of party -- at what is called party allegiance, party loyalty -- a snare invented by designing men for selfish purposes -- and which turns voters into chattles, slaves, rabbits, and all the while their masters, and they themselves are shouting rubbish about liberty, independence, freedom of opinion, freedom of speech, honestly unconscious of the fantastic contradiction... Mark Twain
