I own one of these and have spent a lot of time and effort modifying it to suit my tastes, however I have decided to stay within well within both 922 and CA state law. Specifically, one of the main reasons is the magazine.

    1) The stock 10 round magazine is the most reliable magazine for all SKS variants. The Tapco model is also very good, but I personally would not trust any other magazine. I could use a Tapco stock if I was willing to play the parts count game, but I went with a lighter convertional stock instead.

    2) Although I do believe that my rifle is not legally an SKS, I do not want to be a test case.

Great information guys. Thanks a ton. Now I'll head over to the market place and see who is selling a fixed mag for my rifle.

I know that with some training and practice one can get quite proficient reloading with stripper clips, the problem I have is that many times the cartridges themselves get caught up in the action while I'm pushing them down from the clip. Detachable magazines would minimize this problem... although one would of course have to function test the rifle extensively to make sure of reliable operation with the detachable mag.
