Hopefully this isn't a super far fetched question...

No, not far fetched, in fact it has been discussed here previously. Unfortunately I did not follow the discussion and do not recall the outcome.

The upshot is you have to be pretty far out there. Do not recall the miles off hand. But I don't see the point. Unless the sea is like glass or you're on a large warship, you will be bouncing around so much it will be a miracle if you hit anything with a rifle or pistol. Shotgun...maybe?

It's been forever but my family would always bring and fire rifles when we sailed from San Diego bay to Catalina island. That's not to say it was legal just that we never ran into any issues

One word of warning for you, it is legal as long as you're far enough out, but gunshots are often used as distress signals, so expect to have to answer the radio quite a bit.

No, I will not fix your computer.

The same friend mentioned to me that if we did do this, we would have to face AWAY fromt the coast, as the gun shots echo and a chopper will show up. That still seems kinda weird to me.. considering how there is just a bunch of nothing out there and the shots can be heard on land...

If it is legal I would be concerned about rifle rounds skipping, remember the rule about knowing your target and what is beyond it?

                    Ye have no faith.

Sorry for the thread jack BUT.........

I was wondering about bullet buttons on Tahoe.... hypothetical but would we need a BB since its coastguard water and borders NV and CA? Would it only have to be in place on the CA side?

What about on the ocean? If I'm off the coast of CA.... Bullet button?? No bullet button?

Just go out to sea and cruise over to Somalia. Plenty of targets to shoot and not totally sure, but I don't think anybody but what passes for the government of Somalia is going to give a turd. Be aware some targets may shoot back!

But not sure what the international laws are on things like that, might not really be worth the trip.

IANAL so YMMV and you're at your own risk of course

When the CG or Military does live fire, they announce it on VHF channel 16 and give Lat/Lon and a safety zone. My nephew CG Senior Chief tells me that nowadays they go out past San Clement Island.

Just make sure your not in Mexican waters, the weapons and boat will be confiscated and you'll find yourself in a Mexican jail!
