New Resident to San Francisco - questions...

    Hey There

I previously lived in Massachusetts and just moved to inner San Francisco.

I brought with me a Remington pump shotgun, a USP .45 and a J-Frame revolver.

My question is, do I need to do anything to continue owning these firearms? ie- do I need to bring them to the local police station for registration? I know that nobody gets a concealed permit in san francisco but I want to make sure I can legally own the weapons in case I need to use them in my home.

I previously owned firearms when I lived in LA a few years ago, so I already have a "Safety certificate" if that is even in use anymore.

    Thanks

You are good. Technically you are suppose to keep them locked and unloaded. Pretty ****ing pointless if you ask me.

I moved from northern MA/NH to SF years back, you'll probably find the gun mentality here about the same as Boston area. Outside the Bay area is alot like western MA & the 495 corridor. More accepting.

The "lifetime" gun safety card is gone and is replaced by a 5 year version.

I don't know alot about H & Ks, some have threaded barrels and that puts a semi-auto pistol in AW territory. You can have the barrel, just not on the pistol.

I believe you have a certain amount of time to self register the pistols, costs $19.00 or so and the forms can be downloaded on line.

SF has a few more laws than CA, I've no idea if they can be enforced or have been. They include a 50 caliber handgun ban, an UCH ban and a "store it locked" ordinance.

I assume that the USP does not have a threaded barrel. If it does, you need to remove the barrel immediately and get a replacement.

Otherwise, you just need to register the handguns with the state.

Just for the handguns, or the shotgun also?

One other question- Where can I go to get ammo?

One other thing, if you acquired the handguns in California, you do not need to register them.

Oh, and you know the rules about magazine capacities, right?

Long guns do not need to be registered. That will change in 2014 for new acquisitions.

              Ammo? Outside the city.

I bought all of them in massachusetts.

Mag law = no more than 10 per mag, right? Fine with me, my USP only holds 8+1 anyways.

My "safety" card expired apparently. Do I need to renew it? Or is that only if I want to buy more?

Can I buy ammo without the card?

You only need an HSC to acquire new handguns. There are no requirements to purchase ammo, only money.

Some municipalities require thumbprints as well. Don't know if S.F. does.

If you're looking for ammo locally, High Bridge Arms in the Mission has some in stock. City Arms in Pacifica sells ammo, and the Big 5 in Daly City also sells ammo. I think that Tabor Shooters Supply also sells ammo, and it's relatively close.

^ he pretty much got the major locations.

If you go shooting at Chabot in the east bay there are a couple gun shops on the way.

Never bought ammo in SF but there are plenty of places outside the city to buy without a fingerprint, never had to do that. My friend mentioned he had a place require his fingerprint once to buy ammo. They said it had to do with their proximity to an airport

Don't worry, I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to unlock and load your firearm when you are awakened in the middle of the night by some crackhead on 'bath salts', kicking in your door

                          Welcome to SF!

A few times a year, there is a gun show @ the Cow Palace in Daly City, near SF city limits.
Regarding ammunition.....you can order it online from a few distributors. But, the majority will not ship ammo the a SF resident. There is not a out right ban on having ammo shipped to you..... the problem is SF has a record keeping & ID check requirement for the seller of ammunition.
