THANK YOU!! I'll fill this out have a notarized copy of my drivers lic. and send it out with the form. According to what I have read I will only have to submit a 20.00 fee even though there are 4 long guns involved correct?

One more question please...What if I have a police officer here in Wisc. ask the Stanislaus county police dept. to have them shipped to their Wisc. police dept.? In other words from one police dept. to another, then the police dept. here in Wisc. can insure that I can legally own the guns by having me fill out any necessary forms? I know several police officers both county & city who would help me out, would it be a option I should pursue?

That's what the instructions on the form say - $20 for the first gun of any type and $3 more for each handgun past the first; no additional fee for additional handguns.

You probably already see that the form goes to Sacramento, and can take 30 days or longer to be returned to you.

One thing you should do is find the name of the person handling the guns - the detective, the property department, whoever - and send them a certified letter stating you are filing the LEGR. That way they are on notice that the guns are not 'abandoned' and subject to other disposal.

You haven't mentioned how you are going to demonstrate that you are the new owner; that's critical. Don't have to tell US, but do have to convince CA-DOJ.

It's unlikely that the Stanislaus (is this Stanislaus Sheriff's Dept or a city in Stanislaus county?) agency you are dealing with will remember it, but inherited guns don't need any official processing once the estate is settled - see the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/In...and_Interstate

That means you could just come get them and take them, or an agent in your employ (for instance, a lawyer, or the executor of the estate) could take them and ship them to you; since they're all long guns, they can go USPS.

You could ask the agency to send the guns to you (on your dime, of course) but I wouldn't count on that being successful. But it might; costs very little to ask. Don't need anybody but you in WI, though.

Thanks for the condolences Forgiven. He was the 2nd oldest in the family and I am the youngest. Guys here's an update, I had a member of the local police dept. that's known me for years contact them in an effort to have the guns released from their dept. to the one here. This was the reply he was given...The Supervisor called from the property unit today and politely explained that they will not receipt firearms to anyone but verified family members, with forms of identification, in person. There was no discussion, that's just their department's policy. (Thanks Attorney General Holder and others). There was no cop to cop easement, just that that's the way it's done. So it looks like I'll be paying you all a visit in the near future. I again thank those who offered advice on the best way to secure these guns.

I thought the LEGR trumps their department policy?

                Anyone?

I don't believe that the PD will ship the guns to you. Someone will need to pick them up directly. If one of your siblings is managing the estate that person should be the one who gets the LEGR in their name. You can certainly fill it out for them and just have them sign and mail it. They can then pick up the guns in person at the PD and then they can legally ship them directly to you in WI.

It isnt dept. policy, that is state law. You really don't want the police to be willing to "look the other way" on laws for fellow cops. That is a really bad direction for things to go.

If no one knows anyone specific in the area, here's a list of the FFLs in the Modesto area.
