    'New Numbering" in Penal Code?

    This is a quote from Librarian from another thread;

    " "new" statute? California PC on magazines is unchanged since it went into effect in 2000. The new numbering slid it over from PC 12020 to PC 32310, but no content change. "

    Why did the penal code go with "new numbering"? What happens to all of the penal code books in court with the old numbering? Are they all replaced?

    Penal code books in courts are replaced every year. There are many laws tht are changed every year, not just weapons laws. The new numbering was done to helpfully simplify things, but that yet remains to be seen.

      Back in 2006 the California legislature determined that the penal code sections relating to "dangerous weapons" were too convoluted, confusing and disorganized. They tasked a commission with coming up with a more organized layout for those sections of the penal code. The commission was not allowed to make any changes to the actual laws. They were only to reorganize the code to make it easier to follow.

      The new numbering system went into effect on January 1, 2012. In the past they've probably had to replace the penal code books pretty often anyway because of all the new laws added every year. I know that some police departments came out with "cheat sheets" for officers to carry that had the old PC numbers and the new PC numbers for the most common crimes so that they could fill out their paperwork correctly.

        And, I have a relatively useful translation document, available at the wiki, but the .pdf link is http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/im...ng%2C_2012.pdf

        I keep the Word version of that open on my desktop ...

        Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
