AR and HI Cap Magazine Question

I've been reading in here and I'm still not clear on something. I think I am but want to double check.

If my kid purchased a new AR and we had an old (pre ban) 30 round clip laying around. Have had it for years and don't even remember where we got it and it happens to work in this new AR. Is it legal for him to use it?

The AR has a bullet button and a pistol grip and a muzzle brake. Basically it is your typical off the shelf California legal AR.

    Thanks.

Bullet button = 10 round magazine, period. If you use a 30 round magazine in a bullet button rifle, you've just created an assault weapon. To use the 30 rounders, you need a featureless build without a bullet button.

Furthermore, since the mag is yours, HE can only use it in your presence (in a featureless rifle).

        magazine locker activated=10 rounds max
normal release or magazine locker unlock=anything as long as legally owned

You have to use a tool to release the Mag. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.

Technically, It is not necessarily "Mine". It has actually been in his room with his hunting stuff for years.

Maybe he "found" it hunting one day.

The rifle can be reconfigured for featureless configuration. That means replacing the pistol grip with a non-pistol grip / non-thumbhole stock (switch to a hammerhead grip, or similar for example), removing any flash hider, and removing forward vertical grips, etc. Then removing the bullet button mag lock and replacing it with a standard magazine release.

Then and only then can he use 30 rounders that are already in legal possession. See the flowchart for more details. Using magazines with greater than 10 round capacity is always illegal on centerfire semi-auto AR's that have magazine locks, where the firearm wasn't previously registered as an AW.
