    Life time ban question

I have a buddy who fell in the whole DV misdemeanor disaster.
He was told he would have a 10 year ban and now comes to find out that he is in the life time ban even though the charges were expunged.

Now i understand he can't own a gun but what about going to a range and shooting with me and my guns, is that allowed?

Negative, he cannot purchase, own, rent, touch a firearm in accordance with the ban. The best thing he can do is get a lawyer.

I agree with the consensus that your friend is cooked. He can shoot anytime he wants to with you, so long as its outside of the continental United States.

Just to put the severity of the Lautenburg Amendment into perspective, if one is a military member and is convicted of Domestic Violence they still cannot handle firearms or ammunition ever again. Many military husbands live under the sword of a scorned wife filing DV charges, as if she does so it spells the certain end of his career in the event of a conviction.

Perhaps the OP could adopt a "don't ask, don't tell" policy from this point forward. What would happen if you became friends with someone and invited them shooting not knowing they were a prohibited person? Not a question one normally asks.

Is there some kind of questionnaire I can get to I can give it to anyone I want to go shooting with?

Do not worry. Big Brother will relieve you of your firearms, thus saving the Citizen Soviet countless rubles in unnecessary paperwork.

I actually ran square into this problem last year. I discovered after my parents' divorce that my stepparent is in fact a prohibited person. Not surprising that revelation never came up in discussions prior to the split, as most people tend to avoid conversation topics regarding felony convictions. I never brought firearms into said persons' possession, but the thought occured to me that I could very well have been in deep trouble under certain circumstances. Had a self defense incident taken place under my parents' roof the first warning would have been when the cuffs went on MY wrists for violating the relevant laws on firearms & convicted persons.

Insofar as preventing this from happening, the only solution that comes to mind is to vet your range companions carefully. Even then there's no guarantee if you get stopped by the authorities you will discover any prohibited categories before the constable does. Just another bitter piece of bread to take with the honey of owning firearms.

He can still own black powder! Just putting it out there. Also, they make .45 ACP and Long Colt conversions for the black powder pistols that don't count as a firearm.

              Just sayin'

edit: forgot to mention, you can't use full-power loads with these; you have to use "cowboy loads" on account of the fact that these frames can't handle the chamber pressures that come from firing modern cartridges; a reloading press, bp pistol, and conversion cylinder would cost about the same as a Glock

Here is an interesting hypothetical for you:

You are having a cold one Friday at the local Bar & Grill after a hard weeks work. The identical twin of the current Burger King commercial gal sits down next to you and starts up a conversation. After 1/2 hour or so, the talk turns to hobbies.

You: I like to shoot guns
Her: Really, me too but I haven't been shooting in a long time
You: Actually, I'm meeting some friends tomorrow morning at the shooting range
                Her: Really! Can I go?
You: Sure, but I need to leave really early
Her: We could stop by my place, I could drop off my car, get my clothes and spend the night at your place!
                You: CHECK PLEASE

Are you really going to vet her?

                REALLY?

You had best believe it. I've never shot a firearm during a Herpes outbreak, and I am not keen to discover how firsthand.

Right, and you never exceed the posted speed limit, always come to a full stop, always signal when changing lanes, etc.

Like I said, it was a hypothetical situation. I've shot firearms during many health crises: I've just not been involved in any of them. Care to play further?

Black powder weapons for felons are only FEDERALLY OK, as US Code doesn't include them as firearms.

California DOES. No go for California prohibited persons. See the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/De..._a_firearm/gun and http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Antique_Firearms
