    NPR story on AK47

Did anyone else catch this story maybe a couple weeks ago? They weren't necessarily anti-gun but I cringed at the terms and context they were talking about AK47's and 'assault rifles' like we can go buy them online for cash.

My favorite line was: "The AK47 is probably one of the most dangerous of the assault rifles..."

I could just see the blank look on her face through the radio. Wether they mean well or not I think our gun laws would be a thousand times better if people were just more educated about them.

Like the Swiss... Education over ignorance.

My Marlin 1894 cut my idiot friend's hand when he cocked it (???) while unloaded. That's way more dangerous than an AK47!

Most places you can. I mean, you have to drive over and pick it up, but in most states you just put an ad on craigslist like you were selling a set of socket wrenches.

It is unfortunate that our society lauds the act of ignorantly supporting a cause based on feelings. And here is the crux of the issue with the true anti-gunners (Brady, Bloomberg, Horwitz), they know that if the public were actually educated about guns that the anti-gunners would lose whatever footholds they have left. Which isn't many by the way.

That's one cool thing about our position - all we have to do is educate our friends and family and our support will grow. We are fighting for civil rights here, people LIKE civil rights.

If this is the story that you are talking about,

Russia is planning a Kalashnikov assault rifle redesign that would target the military market. But after 60 years of heavy use by armies, rebels and gangsters, the market may be saturated.

then it is about THE AK-47, the actual assault rifle, and written by an expert on its history and impending replacement…

I am reading his book right now. Chivers is a former USMC company commander, so ought to know a thing or two about small arms. The book begins with a history of the innovations in firearms that led directly to the development of the AK (Chivers traces the beginnings to the development of "volley guns" like the Gatling gun, the precursors to machine guns; something I'm not sure I agree with, since the strengths of the AK platform have less to do with its full auto capability than Chivers insists). Aside from personal doctrinal disagreements, it's a very interesting book.

I was talking more about the host of the show not so much the story itself.

As I said it wasn't some anti-gun propaganda but I could tell just mentioning 'AK47' made the host sound uncomfortable and I can see how they (including some LE) would see even a Saiga as an 'evil weapon'.

Too many people don't understand the difference between bad people wielding fully automatic Assault rifles and the sporting enthusiast with a civilian semi-automatic lookalike.

I wonder if more people just understood more about firearms and that most gun owners are law abiding guys like myself who whine to wife and smother them with tech specs on the next 'dream gun' till they get tired and let us go buy our next toy to fuss over and love...

What about sporting enthusiasts with fully automatic weapons? Because those guys are out there.

Having a select fire weapon doesn't make a difference - its the person behind the firearm. Why blame the characteristics?

Well what about the Professional Russian guy on YouTube with rockets, explosive rounds, dragons breath shells etc. He's a law-abiding citizen yet you know California would throw him into a prison cell as quick as they could drive over there.

I think you're just nitpicking my post a bit. We actually agree on the same point I was only giving scant examples whilst typing during a boring meeting at work on my cellphone.

My argument could be if I was given an RPG launcher and a live rocket grenade I would never use it to damage anything that belonged to anyone or harm anyone. That's my mindset I would probably polish the damn thing and post pictures of myself hugging it.

As someone on this site said somewhere that I have been saying for years: Just make robbery and murder illegal and then gun control would be nullified.
