    ? on my handgun in California

    So to try and not make this to long for you all i will go with the basics.

    * Lived in Utah back in 93 to 98 for College Scholarship.
    * Maintained California Drivers license through out the entire time but got a Utah ID since I was going to college there and lived there most of the year.

    * Purchase a Beretta 92fs back in 1994
    * Brought it back to my families house in 1996 (I believe I did not have to fill out any paper work then)
    * was looking for my Receipt and paperwork for the handgun, I cannot find it anymore.

    So when I was talking to a friend, they were stating I should still fill out a New resident handgun ownship report and submit just to be sure. Now he has me worried because if I am out shooting and someone asks me about the handgun will I be ok if it is not registered here and I no longer have the paperwork of when I had bought it?

    Am I just worried for nothing, what would you do?

    thanks

    Chad

    The law requiring new residents to register handguns they brought with them into California went into effect on January 1, 1998. Even if you had violated the law, the statute of limitations on that crime runs out one year and 60 days after the violation. It's perfectly legal to own and use an unregistered handgun in California. However, if you get caught illegally carrying an unregistered handgun (even one that is legally unregistered), then you can be charged with a felony instead of the usual misdemeanor. If you want to register it you can send in the VolReg form, but it's not required that you register it.

      A little off topic, but if you brought the 92fs into CA back in 96 with any large-capacity mags, you're good to bring any of those back into CA today since they are exempted from the import ban from here to eternity. You may not be aware (or maybe you are since you got 500+ posts)

        Yeah I have 4 of the 15 round mags but i still use my 10 rounder when at the range. I figure this was my ammo will last longer when I am shooting
