Buying a gun while out of the country

Enjoying a vacation in Cozumel Mexico right now and after being offered many things when i walked down the street: tequila, cigars, jewelry, drugs, etc., someone causually threw out "guns" as i passed them. I didn't bother stopping and asking, but it made me think. What are the rules about buying a gun when out of the country? For argument's sake, lets assume whatever country you're in has no laws against cash and carry of guns. What obstacles would you encounter trying to bring the gun back to the US...particularly CA???

You can buy a firearm out of country. You will have to find a US FFL importer to import it for you (not necessarily in CA.) It has traditionally been a way around the e.g. the roster.

            Mexican Guns

While I have never met the OP, I have a hard time believing his story. Recently, while driving toward the Mexican border crossing in New Mexico, I saw a sign warning that guns are illegal in Mexico.

And we all know that people never break gun laws, or drug laws etc. etc.

The guy in mexico was probably just offering some of their backyard cosmetic surgery. Pay $20 and end up with massive silicon filled biceps.

so you would have to find someone in mexico to mail it to an FFL in the US? doesn't sound very easy...good to know it's possible though

you must be thinking of a different Mexico...despite what may be the law, this Mexico is known for doing whatever it feels like....both citizens and police. If you have money, you can get whatever you want. and i didn't say that it would have been legal, i was just wondering what would be necessary on the US end if it were.

Guns are actually legal in Mexico, subject to some restrictions.

                          Mexico's Article 10 (their 2A):

"The inhabitants of the United Mexican States have a right to arms in their homes, for security and legitimate defense, with the exception of arms prohibited by federal law and those reserved for the exclusive use of the Army, Navy, Air Force and National Guard. Federal law will determine the cases, conditions, requirements, and places in which the carrying of arms will be authorized to the inhabitants."

Citizens can have a handgun, in a non-miltary caliber, .38 or smaller, at home. Ranchers, farmers, and such can also have a bolt-action rifle or shotgun for the usual varmint needs, and most of them do.

The signs at the border are for non-citizens, who can only possess if they have a temporary hunting permit as part of an organized hunt.

You need to plan ahead... Customs requires an approved ATF Form 6/6a... Your FFL needs to complete the form with specific data related to the item to be imported. Last I checked it took about 6 weeks for ATF to approval... A run of the mill FFL can occasionally submitt the paper work... I'm not sure if the FFL has to receive the firearm. If all of the paperwork is in order I don't see way you could no drive it across...

I typing from memory, on my cell phone, from a coffee shop...

The "XD/XDM" series is made by HS Produkt in Croatia.
"XD/XDM" is what Springfield Armory markets in the USA, the rest of the world knows it as the HS-2000 series.
