Engraving an 80% lower with "Colt AR-15"

I am curious, what would be the effect of engraving an 80% AR with "Colt AR-15" markings exactly matching a real Colt AR-15?

Would my lower then be an unregistered assault weapon?

    Or just an arrest magnet?

Possibly legal but why even risk it? Get a CA legal Colt lower if you want the Colt logo.

Seems like it might be fun to voluntary register it as a handgun and see what happens...

...maybe I have an odd idea of fun...

I guess if the possibility of being arrested for some engraving that isn't even legit seems like fun to you.

I know you can make replicas of products for personal use, but you can't sell them.

You would be making something that looks to the average LEO or DA, exactly like a weapon on the PC 12276, cat 1 AW list. Do you have the stomach and wallet to retain legal representation and a firearm expert to convince the DA that its only a replica?

It might cost you some authenticity cred, but since you're engraving it from scratch, make the mfg's location be something like, "Magic Kingdom, CA". Make the S/N something equally non-Colt-like, and maybe give the pony logo a unicorn horn.

Maybe you can engrave it "Illegal as F&%K - 5.56mm NATO - Made in a Meth Lab"

What I'm trying to say is, BAD IDEA...

ATF wants you to engrave your 80% builds so it can be tracked back to you if stolen or otherwise found. Are you named Colt?

I remember in the early days with the evans gunsmithing rip off ar's. the sealed mag wells were approved to be sold by the doj, even though they were listed. Were they ever determined to be the evil AW even though the DOJ approved them? and if not, would it not stand to reason that a rifle listed by name with a bullet button would be the same as a listed rifle with a sealed mag well. did this ever get cleared up?
