    Pistol Conversion legality

    Hey all,

New around these parts and was searching a little for answers but really haven't found anything definitive. I was considering purchasing a Ruger MKIII and converting it to a small carbine with the Ares 22 RCU conversion. My basic question is, per CA law is this legal?

I checked up on the size of the firearm and it looks like it's koshure (>26" collapsed for a rimfire and >16" barrel). And I know folks have bought and sold them on the forum, but I'm still unclear about converting a pistol to a rifle......somewhat grey area and I've gotten contradictory answers from multiple parties. Any definitive answers? Thanks and happy holidays.

There is no grey area here. It is legal on both a state and a federal level. I happen to own a custom made Ruger (MK I although, there really isn't a MK I) carbine. Of course, once a rifle, there is an old saying that "it can not go back to a handgun". But, this is now open to interpetation because, ATF has put out a few opinion letters in the last few years allowing certain guns to go back and forth.

none issue you are not converting anything, you are useing a ruger gripframe(not a firearm) on a 22 RCU (this is the firearm)

now if you where to do something like a quick change barrel mod to add a 16 barrel and stock to the orig receiver that would be a conversion
