    NFA - SBS question

Is once an SBS always an SBS?

Can it be removed from being an NFA item?

I would think that you could install a 18”+ barrel and ensure proper OAL and dereg it from the NFA.
The same way you can install a 16”+ upper on an SBR and dereg it (like colt M4LE 6933 lowers)

BUT, I don’t know for sure.

that would be correct. You can reconfigure your SBx into a Title 1 configuration and then send a letter to the NFA branch that you have reconfigured the firearm so that it is no longer in an NFA config and that you want to have the registry updated to show that it is no longer an SBx. You'll probably get a confirmation of that 1-2 years later. If you want to make it back into an SBx, you'll have to do a new Form 1 and another $200.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Ok. Can I buy the receiver without the short barrel or do I need to have an 18"+ barrel on it before it can be shipped from out of state? Does the receiving dealer (07/sot) do the de-registration and swap barrels?

whoever legally possesses it now would be the one that should do the reconfiguration and de-registration.

Ok Thanks for the help. Dealer has it. Will see if he is willing to re-configure and de-register.

Maybe I can have my friendly NFA dealer do that for me.
