AP: California officers own 7,600 assault guns

Didn't see it in the RKBA forum; interesting spin put on some of the facts...

    --Neill

SACRAMENTO -- Peace officers throughout California have bought more than 7,600 assault weapons that are outlawed for civilians in the decade since state lawmakers allowed the practice, according to data obtained by The Associated Press after it was revealed that federal authorities are investigating illegal gun sales by law enforcement.

7600 in a state of 35+ MILLION people? That's one fifth of one percent of the population.
      Yaaaaaawn.

I have to agree with the Democratic Assemblyman

"I think it's much more questionable whether we should allow peace officers to have access to weapons or firearms that a private citizen wouldn't have access to if the use is strictly personal."

...and how many people own OLLs over the past 5 years? 1,000,000

that is where the story is at!

But most likely a much higher percentage of LEOs in this state...which is the more relevant number...

Sure, but what percentage of LEOs are buying weapons they know to be illegal?

                    So we know

                    • scale of problem: ~$10 million for buybacks [who pays? DOJ?
Agency? both made promises of lawful retention into retirement.]
                    • # of lateral transfers btwn depts is a tad predictable at order of
magnitude level, meaning LEO regd AWs in these situations are
very questionable and can result in legal issues. LE agencies
hiring laterals need to be aware that officer is tainted by illegal
possession even if DOJ doesn't pull the AW paper

I don't believe the police should have access to any weapons any other civilian can't have, for any reason.

                        Bwiese..

does this mean, the LEO can own the weapon as long as they are LEO, but if one is retired or out of a job they cannot own such a weapon? Thus, being illegal?

"i don't know what they are using them for" "ill tell you it's not for patrol" fish and game spokesman.

I think it's good. Brings our stupid gun ban back into the publics eye.

"we want to keep up with the criminals"..hmm so do us lowly peons.
