Buying Gun with F-1 VISA

Hi:

I am a international student with F-1 VISA. I have been in US for 4 years.
Recently I am trying to get a hunting license because I know this is the first step to own a gun if you are non-resident alien.

The gun store told me if I leave and re-enter US, I will need another 90 days to legally purchase or own guns. For example, if I have a gun and I leave US for vocation, I will "illegally" own the gun when I re-enter US.

I haven't seen any information about it. Could anyone tell me if it is correct?

I understand the importance of the hunting license, so I will keep in mind about it

Another question, for example, if I leave US during 12/15-1/2, does it mean that I can only buy guns after 4/2 (90 days) even I have stayed in US since July?
