You do not have to keep a mag in the well to stay legal. However; many people recommend doing so to minimize potential drama in a traffic stop or other LE interaction.

A bullet-buttoned rifle is not capable of accepting a detachable magazine. It is capable of accepting a nondetachable magazine.

        This.

The magazine lock modifies the weapon - after that, it no longer matters, for legality, whether a magazine is present or not. Any magazine inserted will require a tool to disassemble the magazine from the weapon.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Whenever I bring my AR-10 out I split the upper from the lower and insert the mag in the mag well(10rd PMAG). I also keep the mag unloaded. Might be a little excessive, but I believe it' diffused two traffic stops already....

I always remove the magazine from my AR when its being transported. The magazine relase is locked so no way it can accept a mag.
Plus I run a cable lock though it so its secure. With a magazine I wouldnt be able run the lock.

Would you expand on that, please? How do you 'lock the magazine release'?

If it wasn't clear above any magazine inserted MUST be empty even if it's a separated or even a stripped lower!

I have a Prince 50 Mag Lock. It uses an Allen Screw to lock the magazine button so it can not be pushed at all.
