    Transporting a pistol

    Hey there,

I am a resident alien and recently made pistol purchase for home security. I have read through the California penal codes (1025 and 12026) about transporting a pistol.
What I understood is that it's legal to have a handgun in vehicle if it's locked in the trunk or is in some other locked container. But, this exception only applies to citizens. Therefore, I would not be able to take my gun to the range. For that matter, how am I even gonna be able to bring it to my house after the purchase?

Does that mean that now I have a very expensive paper weight that I can use for home defense (knocking on wood so I will never have to...)?

    Any thoughts?

12026.2 has you covered in both regards.

      Thanks for the quick reply!

So, from what i read it is lawful to transport it locked in the trunk, between the range and my house...

But the penal code 12025 specifically says citizens and does not mention permanent residents. It may not be a bad idea to wait until I get my citizenship.

I don't have any criminal records and I would like to keep it that way

No. 12026.1 is exceptions to 12025 for citizens, basically making it ok to transport anywhere in a locked case in a vehicle, including the trunk, usually. 12026.2 is exceptions to 12025 for everyone, and does not limit the transportation to vehicles. The word citizen does not appear in 12025.

          Gotcha!

Thanks! Now with this piece of mind, it will be an extra-exciting trip to the range.

Well heck yeah. Btw the citizen/not citizen thing should be illegal under the 14th amendment, but it does not come up much anyway. Have fun.
