I don't know if all of you have been following the Operation Gunrunner scandal. This is a scandal of the first order which ought to be a much bigger political event than Watergate ever was.
Gunrunner has been misreported by the media as usual. What appears to have happened is this. Straw purchasers for Mexican drug cartels were buying military-style weapons in Texas gunstores, primarily AK-47s and similar weapons. Suspicious Gunstore owners properly contacted BATF, so the system worked. BATF instructed the gunstores to complete the sales. BATF assured the aghast and skeptical gunstore owners that everything was under control.
BATF deliberately allowed the guns to cross the border into Mexico. It then naturally lost track of the guns. The guns were subsequently used in a plethora of crimes in Mexico and possibly here in America by the Mexican drug cartels.
What happened next is the real outrage as if the above is not enough. Over time, Mexican governmental authorities have recovered some of the illegal firearms. Naturally, they can be traced back to the USA. Now, Democrats are using the fact of these sales as an excuse to call for gun sale and gun control restrictions against ordinary Americans. So understand this: the Obama Administration BATF and Department of Justice deliberately allowed and encouraged the sale of guns to Mexican criminals. It allowed these guns to get to Mexico. The guns were used in horrific crimes. The Government then seeks to use these sales, which the Government itself engineered, as a political justification to strip Americans of their rights.
If this is not a criminal conspiracy, what is? People died, but the Government evidently thought that it was "worth it" so long as these deaths justify the Government stepping in to restrict the rights of American citizens. Tyranny can go little further.
The lies that the Democrats tell in the context of this breaking scandal are truly breathtaking. The biggest lie is that most of the guns that the criminal Mexican drug cartels are using are American guns. This is a lie. Most of the TRACEABLE guns come from the USA. The traceable guns are a small percentage of the guns, (around 15%) and most of the guns are believed to be sourced from Central and South America--these guns are untraceable. But here is the most outrageous fact of all: MOST OF THE TRACEABLE GUNS FROM THE USA WERE GUNS BROUGHT IN PURSUANT TO OPERATION GUNRUNNER -- In other words the BATF itself is more or less the source of these weapons, since it monitored their purchase and transport to Mexico, and blocked efforts by gunstores to report and stop the purchases (and purchasers.)
US agents have been killed with these BATF-supplied weapons. Mexican citizens have been killed with them. But this was "worth it" to the Obama Administration because the purpose of this operation was to justify stripping Americans of more of their Second Amendment rights.
