CGF 1A/2A Wiki Project - CGF v. Ventura

    All,

With the hearing in our public records/open government case CGF v. Ventura fast approaching, I wanted to ask you all to consider creating a linkable CGF Wiki page with a narrative analysis, the filings, and a timeline.

There will be more to add to this soon, and we want to be prepared for the outcome which will be of significant interest by the media and open government organizations.

Thanks in advance for any assistance or support you can provide in creating a quality record of the case.

    -Brandon

I am happy to help with this and have made an initial page in the CGF wiki - is there somewhere that the filings are available easily, e.g., Jason Davis' office or other?

If presidential records can be requested and released, how can Ventura say their records are to remain sealed??? Also, when is the hearing? Link please

Sheriff Geoff Dean is an embarrassment. With Brooks we knew we had elitism, so we fought Carpenter who he supported. As it turns out, Dean will violate the Public Records Act, and well established case law. He is not a man of the law, but a man of power over who he thinks to be his subjects.

I don't have much to dedicate, but 10 dollars of every paycheck i receive goes directly to the calguns foundation. Today I donate an extra 50, and i hope that others will do the same. Our rights are no longer free.

Thanks for the link. I have a question. Isn't there a lot on the line here? Not just for calguns, but for the people on general? Say calguns fails this one for X reason, the next time another group requests government documents for whatever reason, can't the govt just say "X" says we don't have to and that's the end of it? Hopefully that made sense. Anyone??

It's hard to comment meaningfully without seeing the pleadings. The California Public Records Act is not a new statute, nor is the release of CCW applications a surprise or a new idea.

Also, this is a trial court. The result will not itself be binding precedent - if it goes up on appeal, precedent may be created.

Without having seen the pleadings, I'm reluctant to say anything too strong - but from what I've read so far, Ventura County's position sounds frivolous and totally without support in existing law. I'm personally very curious to understand how they're trying to justify what's apparently a clear loser of a position, legally speaking.

Thanks to all who've contributed so far.

Yes, this case could be hugely important and to all in California if appealed.

Does it seem likely to you that it would be appealed? The case seems to have such an obvious conclusion that it doesn't seem worth litigating at all for the county. I'm still shocked that our new sheriff didn't have the common sense to release the information when he started in office at the beginning of this year.
