IRS already has its enforcement arm (which is armed quite well), and many revenue agents already carry. I'm sure may DMV folks already carry "gats", too

And... how often exactly do you go out and confront armed felons and try to arrest them? Tell ya what, you go out and arrest an armed gang that's willing to shoot you, armed with "less than lethal" weapons and then we'll talk.
