If Anti gunners (and certain politicians/law enforcement) claim that calling 911 is an appropriate means of self defense... then shouldn't the government provide every citizen with a cell phone when away from home? And if they don't provide one, can it not then be argued that carrying a weapon was then justified as you had no means to call for help?

Irrelevant, you are supposed to be a victim. That is what they want. Anyone who isnt a victim is a threat to them....but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom. -
Time to nut up, or shut up.

I have called 911 many times in my life. It is not uncommon to have them not answer or get a recording that they are busy. The biggest failure for cell phones is not having the calls routed to the most efficient, relevant, and local PSAP. Calling 911 from a cell usually is routed to the CHP.

No, because the government is not your mommy. If you're an adult, you need to take care of yourself. If you're a child, talk to mommy and daddy about it."It is long been a principle of ours that one is no more armed because he has possession of a firearm than he is a musician because he owns a piano. There is no point in having a gun if you are not capable of using it skillfully." -- Jeff CooperComment

Have you ever called 911 from a cell phone? Since I got a cell phone in the mid 90's I've had to call 911, or been there when someone else called 911, on 3 different occasions. Last one about 2 years ago. All three calls were initially put on hold due to all 911 operators being busy at that time.
One time we were on hold for literally 10 minutes. Sorry if this were life and death I know from experience that calling 911 isn't going to be my first step. First get relatively safe, then call 911, and the getting safe part is all on you and you alone. The police don't get paid enough to die for you anyways. They make the same whether they are coming to the rescue or drawing chalk lines.Last edited by stix213; 12-23-2010, 5:16 PM.Comment

I am here to talk about guns, not the law. Nothing I write here is a legal opinion or advice. I am not your lawyer. You are not allowed to rely on anything I say in order to act or not act in any situation.Comment

So by the answers so far, if you had no means of calling for help (even if you think it may help... which we know wouldn't) would you then be legally justified for carrying you own help? Do you think this would be acceptable to a jury (of peers not progressives).
Not that I will ever have to argue the point, but how can you call for help if you aren't given the means too?
So in the end, leave me alone. I'll take care of my own safety. (In a perfect world)Comment

After all you are not entitled to carry where there is no cell reception, if your battery is dead, etc.------------------------

If "I" was on the jury... it would fly. Hopefully with everyone else here it would also. Regardless of the manipulated law or narcissistic judge's orders.Comment

Re: the OP, I was in plenty of trouble when I was younger (and more foolish). Cell phones didn't exist. I managed.
Re: 911, I keep local PD emergency numbers in my phone for a majority of the areas I frequent/reside. I think the last time I dialed 911 was 1997.Comment

If you were to be prosecuted for illegally carrying a gun, you would not get a jury of your peers. In fact nowhere in the law are you entitled to a jury of your peers. Under the Sixth Amendment you are entitled to an "impartial jury." And I can pretty much guarantee that none of us would be on your jury.
During the jury selection process, your lawyer will be keeping members of the Brady Bunch off. But the prosecutor will be assuring that NRA members and anyone else interested in, or knowledgeable about, guns will not be participating.
So your jury will, at best, be somewhat neutral with no great affinity for guns and probably at least a little troubled by the idea of an ordinary person walking around in public with a gun. Personally, I don't think that sort of jury would be at all sympathetic to your argument. Do you? If you do, you're welcome to have a go at it. Let us know how it all turns out.
But it's not. Welcome to real life."It is long been a principle of ours that one is no more armed because he has possession of a firearm than he is a musician because he owns a piano. There is no point in having a gun if you are not capable of using it skillfully." -- Jeff CooperComment
