    AR57 Question

    Hello All,

I'm building a CA legal AR57 with bullet button on the mag lock. For anyone not familiar with the AR57 set up, the upper receiver is the part that carries the magazine. The mag well on the lower is where the spent shells are ejected.

My AR57 will have a couple evil features so that is why I have the mag lock and fixed 10rnd mag.

My question is this: Does the AR lower have to have a bullet button as well? I plan to use a modified AR15 30rnd mag as a brass catcher in the AR lower. I just want to make sure it would be OK to use a standard mag release button set up on the lower. It sure makes it a heck of a lot easier to empty the brass catcher with the push of a button instead of having to use a tool.

    Thanks

That funny little oval button on the lower is no longer a mag release, it's a brass catcher release. You should be fine.

PK is right. Even if you could jam a loaded .223 mag in there(which you can't), it wouldn't feed. The old magwell which used to feed the gun, is just a poop shoot now.

side note - reminds me of that southpark episode where they crap out their mouths...lol. Ew.

If you REALLY want to get their attention, hollow out a 100rd Beta double-drum for use as a brass catcher.

I concur, the standard magazine release is nothing more than a shell catcher release. My AR57 is featureless so my lower is also featureless. In fact, I just put a Surefire Muzzle Brake on it so I can suppress it. I have to find the time to go test it out.

IMO build a featureless, otherwise you are limited to 10-round mags with a mag-lock on the upper!

I put a JP Enterprises compensator on the front, looks formidable and works great.

              I'll post some pics soon.

I like the featureless route, but the forward grip pod is really cool and useful. I've got a Monster Man I can put on there and the butt stock is a standard A2. I dunno, I'll have to see what's comfortable and go with that.

Most likely he's limited to 10rd mags anyway.

There is no constructive possession for AWs in California. You're fine. It's a brass catcher release.

I wouldn't do it, but you could even keep it in a case next to a standard AR upper and a regular magazine. As long as it's in a legal configuration, you're good to go.

Here's some pics of the rifle with brass catcher attached. And yes, the 10rnd mag is a fixed mag.

I had to shave a lot off the 30rnd mag tube in order to make it fit properly. It was a painful sacrifice of a 30rnd mag, but don't worry. I did a proper ritual to appease the gods so there won't be a kitten sacrificed as well due to the destruction of a 30rnd mag.

That mag was always giving me problems. Besides, I kept the spring and follower to rebuild it after I get a new replacement tube.

Like I said, I had a proper ceremony to appease the gods. I drank single malt scotch, burned a few cigars, listened to some blues, and watched a few Dirty Harry movies before the mag tube was sacrificed.
