Just caught this on the 10 o'clock news

KRVU TV here in N. Cali just ran a news story out of Palo Alto. They were talking about Holiday shoppers out and about and the risk from criminals watching them and looking for 'easy pickings'. They asked one woman what she would do if someone grabbed her packages and took off...."chase them I guess" was her reply. This comment was followed by a "Not a good idea" from the reporter and a clip of a policewoman on the street there saying the best thing to do was to "BE A GOOD VICTIM"!!! I kid you not, couldn't believe it.
"I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them."

Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

Yep. If you aren't truly prepared to deal with the situation, maybe it is best to just be a good victim.

I mean, it may sound harsh, but by not being prepared you have chosen to be a victim.
Nothing to see here. . . Move along.

Dude, this is pretty much the same story every year. Robberies go up during the holidays.

Best thing to do is just give them what they want

I would never consider drawing on someone over a material possession, even though my initial gut reaction might be otherwise. What got me was the attitude and mind set of the officer, there was no talk of criminality of the situation, just a "be a good victim" and have a nice day. I'm sure any lowlife thieves watching felt emboldened by the interview.

I don't know. . .Maybe you are on food stamps and the food is bought using those food stamps. . . meanwhile, your family is starving at home and the theft of their food could be construed as threatening bodily harm? Ha ha. Kidding. . .

I've been robbed at knife point before, and I can say without hesitation that I would have killed that man had I been armed.
This may sound strange and unbelievable to you, but it is real and true.

Great response, this part is more realistic when you go to jail. "your family is starving at home"

Is anybody here familiar with Bruce Schneier? He's an incredible thinker in the IT/Security world. He's been blogging about the TSA's rise to power for some time now and his two propositions to stop terrorists since 9/11 have been (1) Make the cockpit doors unbreechable and (2) Tell the passengers they must fight back in the event of a terrorist takeover.

We've been trained for at least two generations to "NOT RESIST DON'T FIGHT JUST GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT" and it's clear this is not a winning strategy. Not only that, it's damned un-American. I'm sick of being told to lie down and take it. It's no wonder our neighborhoods have been taken over by gangs and thugs - the good guys learned good to sit back and let the police take care of things. FXXK that!

Armed resistance to crime is certainly part of taking back our neighborhoods, but more importantly I think we the people just need to get out and make our good presence known on the street. Walk and talk to neighbors. Walk at night. Install street lighting if your damn city won't do it (like Sacramento... dumbasses)

Being a good victim (from an ideal society's perspective) means shooting the criminal you fear great bodily harm or death from. Though the officer probably sides with criminals and hopes they will all live long and prosperous lives - and holding such positions are a sure way to be named Police Chief.

Perhaps the Brady Bunch and LCAV could offer classes on how to be a victim - like the NRA's Refuse To Be A Victim classes, but in reverse. They could practice handing over your property and children as easily as possible to avoid inconveniencing the criminals. Perhaps the people who were really good at it could get T-shirts at the end of the day that said "I'm a GREAT victim!".
"[T]he liberties of the American people [are] dependent upon the ballot-box, the jury-box, and the cartridge-box . . without these no class of people could live and flourish in this country." -- Frederick Douglass (1892)
