I was recently told by the DOJ that I am likely prohibited from owning firearms until I reach 30 years of age. They are still conducting their investigation, but from the talks I've had with them, it sounds like I am restricted.
The restriction stems from a misdemeanor 417 conviction (not involving a firearm FYI) from when I was 15 years old. This was more than 10 years ago and would satisfy California's 10 year prohibition had it been an adult conviction, but apparently minors with the same offense are prohibited until they turn 30. That means that the minimum duration is 12 years and change for a 17 year old who committed the same crime or 15 years in my case. I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind this, but then again reason and gun laws don't always go hand in hand in Cali.
I was hoping that I could get some advice from some CalGunners on how to proceed. From the research I've done and the conversations I've had with the DOJ, expunging the charges would not restore my rights. Is there any recourse here or am I stuck waiting until I'm 30? Please advise.
