You misunderstand. As a former soldier I understand that when one soldier is joking with another things can get pretty off-color. . . but the difference is the audience and the visibility of the joke to the public.

We can't jump all over Officer Tucson (or whatever his name was) from East Palo Alto about his Facebook comment and then joke about such an issue in the way it was.

But maybe I am just getting sensitive in my old age in thinking, proper place, proper time.
Nothing to see here. . . Move along.

Wow. The actual numbers certainly present a different perspective than that intended by the authors. To me this is a resounding affirmation of the responsibility and safety of millions of law abiding American gun owners.

Here's a bit more I found listing the causes of deaths of police officers so far in 2010.

The Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP) is dedicated to remembering all law enforcement officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

Total Line of Duty Deaths: 146
        Gunfire: 50

Obviously no officers have ever been killed with sporting weapons. Everyone knows that sporting weapons aren't dangerous, it's only the "assault weapons" that a lethal high-powered menaces to society.

Perhaps my situation is unique, but EVERY one of my "sporting" firearms is far more "high powered" than my AR-15. Weird, 'eh?

I'm pretty sure the whack-job in Minkler that shot a Reedley PD and Fresno SO had a legally configured AR, I don't recall what he actually used on the two officers he murdered but he had several legal rifles, had been off his meds and had previously discussed with his wife that he'd be taking some cops out instead of going back to prison.

Any C&R collectors collection (sp?) is far more dangerous than so called "assault rifles"

Any 03 Springfield or P-17 Enfield in 30.06 is far deadlier in the hands of a nutjob with evil intentions. Any scoped hunting rifle could be used for evil intent.
