The world was very different then. Plus Preston was a former cop so I would gather he and his case were better known to beat officers than you would be.

There weren't portable voice and video recorders available to the "common man" and even if they were the repercussions to the officers just weren't the same. We live in a place and time where police abuse is actually at a low point and hopefully to be driven lower. This is largely because so many cases where it happens end up recorded and on youtube. That simply didn't exist "back then."

With all that in mind I have no doubt that he was harassed while his case made its way through the courts.

      police harassment

There is always the potential for harassment. But after Rodney King, they are also well aware that their actions could be on camera from un expected places.

I would suggest that anyone who is doing lawsuits against police agencies consider having automated recording devices in their cars.

For the over cautious, make sure your car has no visible issues and just take some cell phone camera pictures on a regular basis.

Check for GPS tracking on your car.

If you were suing an individual officer for say assault while he/she was off duty and drunk and belligerent at a bar you might find yourself collecting tickets or a stack of DUIs, and perhaps a substance you've never used in your life might show up in your pocket during a search. That stuff happens. But not for suing a county over a CCW dispute. Nobody stands to lose their job or even see disciplinary action for that.
