What to do with guns that have been passed on to you?

My grandfather passed me a couple guns that I know were never registered in his name. How do I transfer these?

You can do a voluntary registration w/the doj. But since it was your grandfather who gave them to you, legally you are not required to do so.

I am not a lawyer but I believe for handguns it is required, and for long guns it is not.

            Intra-familial transfers

If you grandfather "passed" you firearms and any of them are handguns, you are required to register them with DOJ using the "Operation of Law or Intra-Familial Handgun Transaction" form. You can download this form at: http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf

Long guns do not need to be registered using this form and, of course, "assault weapons" cannot be transferred.

Even if you have missed the deadline to register an intra-familial transfer(which is 30 days after taking possession of the handgun PC 12078(c)(2)) DOJ would prefer that the handgun is registered.
