Brass knuckles - illegal in and of themselves.
Switchblades and butterfly knives (if over 2" blade length) must be on your PERSON or in PUBLIC before it becomes a crime, otherwise they are legal (including transportation in your trunk).
..and BWO wasn't charged with brass knuckles.Comment

Good idea. The fun part about balisongs is being able to whip them open and shut. The lame part is learning how to do that.
You can't help cutting yourself in the process. Taping the blade will help, but it changes the balance. Get the trainer first. That will probably take care of your gadget knife urge.

From what I understand and read on some knife laws, detent is that last little bit of movement which almost folds the knife back into the handle. All my knives I can open with a flick of the wrist have it, except for the balisong, which I must have lost years ago! I don't think the clasp would count as detent.
