A question I can't find the answer to....

Okay, I have a friend in California that wants to sell me one of his rifles. I am in Montana but am planning on taking a road trip to see him soon anyways. Can I buy the rifle from him and just take it home? In Montana I can buy a friends rifle and have it as my own. There is no registration, bureaucracy bs etc.... Is that how it is in California? Thanks for helping a Montanan out.

Don't think so. He will have to send it to your FFL.

Federal law says you have to go through an FFL. Easiest for him to ship to an FFL in your home state as he can send it directly to that FFL.

Even if he is my friend? So I wonder how that works in Montana? It's like if I go to a gun show, I can buy a guy's rifle and walk out the door with it with no registration. That must not be a Federal thing then.

that is OK because you are both MT residents. When the gun is transferred interstate, fed law applies and you must go through an FFL

Since 1968, Federal laws have prohibited the transfer of firearms between residents of different states, unless the transfer is done through a FFL dealer in the recipiant's state of residence [18 USC 922(a)(3) & (5)]

Oh okay. That makes sense. I will have them transferred via FFL. Thanks for the help everyone.
