Unofficial: Questions for Sacramento County Sheriff Candidate Bret Daniels thread...

This thread will be for asking questions of Sac Sheriff Candidate Bret Daniels. I see he is a member here at calguns.net and is not shy to post. So let's ask him questions. Hopefully he can find time in what I'm sure is a very busy schedule to answer any questions we may have.

    .

Firstly let me state that I'm just starting to bone up on the Candidates so forgive me, and others, if we are not fully informed on your stances. That is the aim of this thread.

    My Question:
What specifics can you tell me about the reason you were fired as a deputy?
I heard this mentioned on a KTKZ radio show. Jim Cooper(for the record; Can't stand him) said something to the effect of, 'You were running names' I believe on a database and that it was a felony. Can you please elaborate on this issue for me or direct me to more info on the subject that may explain it?

Also forgive me for bringing it up AGAIN, but I could care less whether or not you are as fancy with your wording as other candidates. So far I love where you stand on issues of public safety(putting more officers in cars and not at desks) and personal protection(shall issue CCW; personal protection is sufficient cause).

For what it's worth, No employee gets to set the terms during any action to dismiss or discipline them. You don't get a fair trial, as it is not constitutionally mandated,
The employer can focus on any one thing or several, and limit your ability to defend yourself. The sheriff's department is just like any other employer in that regard. If you've ever been fired by an employer, you'll understand this process. An employer can accuse you of stealing, dereliction, improper behavior towards another employee, or anything they want, and with or without a hearing, place their determination in your record and terminate you with that written in their file forever. This is the world of employee/employer relationship, and anything released by an employer about you should be taken with a huge grain of salt

I have no stake in this fight. Just presenting what is public knowledge.

Daniels, 49, was with the Sheriff's Department from 1988 until 2000, working most of that time on patrol duty. This is his fourth run for sheriff, and follows two successful bids for the Citrus Heights City Council.

He works as director of public safety at New Park Mall in the Bay Area city of Newark.

        The pitch:

Daniels has virtually no fundraising apparatus or organized support for his candidacy but said that did not stop him from winning council elections.

His "contract" with the citizens of the county outlines his goals, including a vow to get more deputies out of offices and onto the streets and to trim management ranks. Like Jones, he said he wants to explore cost-sharing with other departments for services such as SWAT teams.

He also said he wants to allow more citizens to obtain concealed weapons permits. "If they live here and don't have a disqualifying factor like a drug history or history of violence" a permit should be issued, he said.

        The baggage:

Daniels was fired from the Sheriff's Department for dishonesty in 2000. Sheriff's officials have said his dismissal came after a trip to Arizona during which he asked an officer to use a police computer to look up the address of a female friend.[b] "I think it's going to be important for the voters to look at the baggage, if you will, of all three of us," he said.[b/]

Cooper, 46, has been with the Sheriff's Department 25 years and is easily the best known and best financed of the three. He is in his third term on the Elk Grove City Council and has served as the city's mayor.

Cooper worked as an undercover drug officer, commander of the jail and now heads the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force. He has endorsements from numerous law enforcement unions and groups, and is backed by former Sheriff Lou Blanas.

        The pitch:

Cooper has positioned himself as an outsider in his own department, criticizing McGinness for failings he said led to last year's layoffs of 122 deputies. He contends better management, aggressive courting of federal grants and cost controls could have saved their jobs.

        The baggage:

Over the years, Cooper has exhibited behavior his foes characterize as reckless. He faced an anonymous sexual harassment complaint in 2005 over a comment to a civilian employee who worked for him and was about to get married.

Cooper acknowledges he told the woman she needed "jungle love" before she got married and that it was inappropriate.

"It wasn't sexual harassment. I told an off-color joke in the workplace," he said. "I shouldn't have done it."

The Sheriff's Department, which investigated the complaint internally, would not discuss the case or the outcome.

The woman, who still works for the department, does not want to be identified. She said through a Sacramento attorney that she supports Cooper and believes the incident was blown out of proportion.

Cooper said the complaint kept him from running for sheriff in 2006, when McGinness won the office.

Cooper also concedes that in a heated exchange in 2005, he called then-Elk Grove Mayor Dan Briggs a "*****." It's not the only time Cooper has been accused of impolitic behavior as a councilman.

In February 2005, the county grand jury found that Cooper repeatedly voted or took part in discussions on the Sheriff Department's multimillion-dollar contract to provide law enforcement services in Elk Grove.

Despite receiving at least 12 written opinions warning against it, Cooper involved himself in votes or discussions of the contract 20 times between June 2000 and May 2004, the grand jury found.

He also took actions that other council members found intimidating. He began to wear his gun to council meetings and "acted repeatedly in a belligerent and uncivil manner," the grand jury reported.

Cooper, who has a natural charm and ribald sense of humor, concedes he is sometimes too blunt. He said he's learned over the years to temper his comments.

"You know what, I've made mistakes in my life, and I still may make some mistakes," he said. "But I have the best intentions of doing the right thing. It's always been that way."

Cooper also faced questions over his stint as commander of the Sacramento County Main Jail in 2002, when a record seven inmates committed suicide. Some deputies began to call the I Street jail "the morgue."

"Each commander has had incidents at the jail," he said. "The bottom line is you've got 2,400 inmates there, and none of them wants to be there."

Jones was the target of a federal grand jury probe in 2002 as part of a scheme by a Sacramento group to cash a stolen $3.8 million Treasury check.

Jones said he was questioned because he had opened a law office inside a J Street building owned by Don Malone, a bail bondsman who gave him space in return for minor legal services, such as work on leases and contracts.

Malone, his brother Brian and several others later pleaded guilty in federal court. Jones said he came under suspicion because Brian Malone boasted "that I was their cop on the take, I was their cop in their pocket."

A search warrant affidavit filed at the time had claims from one of the defendants that Jones kept the Malones and their Fast Break Bail Bonds "informed of drug raids, criminal history information, warrant checks, etc."

The document also indicates that detectives found "numerous Criminal History inquiries made by Jones that do not appear to be work-related" and that Jones' telephone records indicate he made calls to Fast Break around the same time he was checking criminal histories on department computers.

Jones said that during the probe he was summoned into Assistant Sheriff Mike Smith's office in the presence of internal affairs officers and told he was being placed on leave because of a federal probe.

He said he called the FBI and went in for an interview immediately. Jones said he took a polygraph the next day that was inconclusive, then took a second and passed.

After that, he went before a federal grand jury, where "the U.S. attorney grilled me."

Michelle Rodriguez, the assistant U.S. attorney, said Jones was investigated because he worked in the Malone building. "There was no link between Scott Jones and the attempts to cash and launder the proceeds of the stolen U.S. Treasury check," she said.

Brian Malone also said Jones had nothing to do with the checks or running criminal histories for Fast Break.

"Scott Jones was the most honest person I ever met," Malone said in an interview at the Sacramento County jail, where he is being held on unrelated vehicle theft charges.

        The campaign:

Jones contends Cooper's supporters will attack with anything they can, and points to questions raised over his residency. He said he and his family bought their dream home in Colfax in 2007. After deciding to run for sheriff, he said, he moved in September into an Antelope home that he has owned for 18 years. McGinness made a similar move, leaving El Dorado County for Folsom before his 2006 run.

Jones said he is the only candidate living in the Sheriff's Department's jurisdiction. Cooper lives in Elk Grove; Daniels in Citrus Heights.

He has said he wants his personnel records opened for inspection; the county is assessing the legality and whether it could raise privacy issues for other employees. Cooper initially said he would open his records, too, but now says law enforcement unions object.

Having lived in Sacramento all my life... I'm sick of our Sheriffs being politicans... Daniels is the only candidate who hasn't been a part of the system since the beginning and definitely doesn't seem like the type too fall to the political pressure that John McGinness fell to...

I could care less about the allegations against Daniels, because to be frank. I've seen a lot of good cops and deputies get their careers ruined over stupid ****. Surprisingly a close friend of mine lost his career with the Sacramento Police, for a HELL OF A LOT LESS then Cooper!

Wow. Some of those are pretty epic.

I made an image for a yard-sign I plan to order through Vistaprint, I remade the header of his sight into a large DPI rez PSD for 18x24" signs, wasn't hard really, matched the font and colors and bam! yard-sign. vistaprint is like $10 for a basic yard-sign plus the shipping and all.

I'm willing to offer the PSD file for free to anyone else wanting to make their own prints, not to use and sale yard-signs.

If that is ok to do?

Here is a preview of what I did. the full size is 300DPI, 18x24" vistaprint uses 18x27" but you can crop the image as you want, I just trimmed off the bottom. If it is cool to do I'll post the PSD file
