    Bear pepper spray legal?

Ive been reading a couple of posts in calguns where people suggest carrying bear pepper spray over a gun to ward off animals.*

Isnt carryin bear pepper spray essentially illegal?*

As they are always larger than the 2.5 oz maximum container size( or do small containers of it exist)?

This is per california penal code 12403.7*

About 2 years ago i emailed my local pd *to confirm about whether bear pepper legal since they come in large containers greater than 2.5 oz
    ( california maximum container size)
Their conclusion was also that bear pepper spray greater than 2.5 oz is illegal.

Is there a law that im not aware of that allows bear pepper spray? Or does bear pepper spray come in siZes below 2.5 oz( cant imagine thats enough)

    Thanks !*

Hmmm may have figurrd it out
Myself i believe theres an exemption for chemicals registered as an economic poison provided that they are not used on humans. Need to check whether there are bear pepper sprays registered

Bear spray is legal and the canisters can contain more than 2.5 Oz if the company that makes it registers it with CA as a pesticide. See here.

An interesting question. A couple of weeks ago my friend's house was burglarized. His kids came home to find their house trashed and their dog cowering in the back room, soaked with what appered to be bear spray. Mom and Dad come home to find an army of cops, fire dept. and Hazmat! Took awhile before they could even get carpet cleaners in.
This is a similar M.O. used on an elderly gentleman in North County.
If you really want to carry 18 oz. of noxious chemical around, go ahead.
Just know that, unless you are a professional hunting guide, the police may question your, ahh, motives.

I gave my wife one she carries on her belt when she walks the dog.
Much more powerful and efficient than a regular little mace can. Especially against other dogs. She can hit them 20-30 feet away.

The 2.5oz limit is for chemical weapons intended for use aganist humans.
There is no size limit for use aganist animals.

I've used it a bunch on miscreants in SF, never had a cop blink.

Carrying bear spray in an area known for bears is usually not a problem. The concentration of OC in some bear sprays is higher than that licensed for use on humans. Using bear spray on humans can land you in trouble, if the DA has a bug in his butt.

Honestly, unless you are actually planning on using it on bears, I recommend that you don't use bear OC. A 2 oz can of Fox will be plenty unless you're dealing with a riot.

I heard of people using wasp spray which is equally effective as pepper spray and can spray 25 ft. away. And its only like $3.

That's a good way to end up in prison. There's all kinds of poison in that stuff, checkout the MSDS.
