I definitely agree that a good safe is worth the piece of mind it will give you. ADHD + bipolar is a tough one. I have a daughter who is bipolar and with meds is leading a normal life. without the meds we are talking a whole 'nuther game
I agree. ADHD is probably overdiagnosed, but it IS real. No amount of discipline will cure a mental disorder.

I support the 2nd amendment but you have a moral obligation to get your guns out of there. Otherwise you'll lose you guns/life/ or wife's kid. A safe is not safe. Given enough time he'll be able to figure out how to get into it. Trust me, when I was little I got into my uncle's gun safe. He was there in the room with me, and I wasn't crazy so it was ok.

I have two mentally ill step brothers. As a result my dad decided he could not own any guns in the house.

Like I said earlier, you are in a tough position.

Regardless if the DDA is a *itch and is looking to put something more on her resume; you are in a household with a troubled child. This is an unfortunate situation where you may be absolutely within your rights, and still be wrong. Maybe wrong is the incorrect word to describe it, but one screw up with a door left unlocked or a child being ambitions at 3AM

While the Sentry gun safe is better than a gun locker, or just a locked room - it is probably not a good idea to have power tools next to it that can be used to get into it. A standard circular saw could cut right through the sides and top of that safe. Then again, I don't know how determined a 10yo kid having a mental episode would be to get into the safe...

To be honest, I think you should be on a some sort of mental health forum than a gun forum. You've got an answer to your question, you've looked at the item you're going to buy, figure that's good enough.

If you continue to spout your problems about this kid, you will need mental help to stay in this relationship.

My advice, take your guns, clothes, car, etc. and run like the wind. This situation is going to kill you mentally and financially, and the kid may kill you physically if you stay.

Running away is a bit drastic. If you really do love your fiance, you'd stay and work it out. Hopefully she is extremely level headed and realizes that her kid has a serious problem and 'being in the system' is better than one of you being six feet under, if push comes to shove. If that's not the case than probably she loves her son too much, just like John Wayne Gacey.

Running away with absolutely no contact is the best answer. Trying to raise another man's child is emotional suicide in most cases, and I would suggest avoiding it at all cost. Remember, the mother of the child went to bed and gave it up for that loser boyfriend/husband in the first place and now found the nice guy with security to raise him.

Run Away, Run Away, Run Away, and make sure you have all your guns. You're 26 and on the way to a great career, you don't need a dream killer to keep killing your dreams with HER problems.

I lived with a girlfriend/fiance that was bipolar. I will never voluntarily put myself in that type of situation again. It was an extreme roller coaster ride through HELL. I kept my firearms locked up. At times I had my best buddy come get them all and take them away. At times I locked up all the knives.

I was in over my head and fully admit it. We both have moved on since then thankfully.

One thing to think about - a womans baby / child will always come before you. Its just natural. If your stay be the best husband andthe best father you can be. It will be a lot of work and it will take its toll on you.

NEVER LEAVE ANYTHING DANGEROUS AVAILABLE OR LYING AROUND!

That's a pretty broad statement to make. While it CAN be true in some cases, I suspect it is NOT true in most... I've done a fair-to-middlin job of raising a step-child, and yeah, it's been trying at times, but nowhere close to being "emotional suicide". There are probably 100s of 1000s of step-parents out there who would describe their experience similar to mine.

(your statement may very well be true in this situation, though; it sounds like a tough one)

I'm very thankful my step-father did not feel this way. I know for a fact my childhood was happier, and my opportunities much greater with him than they would've been with my natural father. I owe him a lot. I'm glad he didn't "run".

Are they the laminated Master padlocks with the blue plastic stripe? Those locks are a joke. Easy to pick, and a good whack on the side with a hammer will dislodge the bolts and release the shackle. I'd recommend using locks with ball-bearing locking where the bolts/balls are cammed into position, rather than just being held in place by springs. American makes some good ones.

I am going after work today to check out a Cannon Patriot series safe and if I like what I see I think I will be getting it.
Good plan. Looking at and touching the safe before selecting it to buy is wise.

You may be able to find a better compromise between securing your firearms and being prepared to protect your family. The guns that you're not directly controlling at all times can (and should) stay safely in the safe. You could still carry one (perhaps a pocket pistol) while you're at home and awake if you judge that there's little chance of it leaving your immediate control. It can move to a steel lock box bolted down in the bedroom when you go to sleep, or otherwise can't keep it secured on your person (say, when changing clothes, etc.). And don't forget a dog to give you advance warning so you have time to wake up and retrieve your home-defense gun!

I am not going to let my happiness be dictated either by a DDA or by a condition that everyone insists to me is treatable. I will wait however long it takes to figure that out, even if it's forever. She and I deserve that and so does the little guy.
I hope you can help the boy get his issues under control so he can lead a happy and productive life. I don't know about his specific problems, but a lot of mental problems are just a case of messed-up brain chemistry, and the drugs for a lot of conditions keep on getting better. Having a pair of folks who are patient and won't give up on him will help stack the odds in his favor, too.

                            Hang in there!
