    Shipping ammo to California

Hello, I found this site through AR15.com where I am a regular poster (under a different screen name).

I've done some searching and still haven't been able to determine why some companies will not ship ammo to certain areas of California.

The list of "no ship" areas I usually see include: the cities of Los Angeles, Sacramento, Oakland and San Francisco; and the counties of Orange, Napa, Ventura, and Yolo.

Are there actually laws banning ammo shipments to these places or is it purely political?

I've been selling ammo online myself and I don't want to leave out any potential customers if I don't have to.

Thank you very much for your help.

It seems to have more to do with the company than where you live (at least in my case). It's annoying, but I have to avoid some suppliers due to their unwillingness to ship to me, while others are happy to do it. Go figure.

Some areas have local ordinances against ammo sales and some companies are overly broad in their own protection.

I'm pretty sure that it's illegal to ship mailorder ammo to Los Angeles city. Problem is some sellers think that also applies to surrounding areas which it doesn't.

Whether ammo registration ordinances in CA cities can be enforced against out of state shippers is an unresolved question. Some cities are indicating that it is not their intention to enforce these ordinances. However, similar local or in state restrictions in other fields have been enforced against out of state shippers/sellers in the past.

What about the people who accept the shipments? Their orders I mean. I live in Los Angeles and get lots of ammo via internet vendors. Delivered right to my door from UPS.

Depends on the wording in the ordinance/statute.

Not illegal to ship to Orange County. FUD.

Correct. The majority of these ordinances do not impose liability on purchasers, only ammunition retailers. I do not believe the Los Angeles ordinance imposes liability on purchasers who do not comply with the law, but please refer to all local ordinances prior to engaging in any transactions you may be concerned with.

San Francisco shouldn't be on that list. The muni code banning the sale of ammo in the city was part of the SF Handgun Ban ordinance.
Which was never in effect as it was challenged immediately after it was passed.

Of course City web peeps were slow to remove it from their web site.

There are no legal restrictions in Ventura County either. I think there is some vendor confusion relating to the lead ammo ban for hunting in Condor sanctuary areas. This has no effect on ammo shipment.
