Congress: Passengers Can Bring Guns on Amtrak Trains

    Not quite, but almost

On Tuesday night Congressional negotiators reached an agreement that the final version of a transportation bill would include an amendment that restores the right of Amtrak travelers to pack their firearms in checked baggage.

National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said his organization was pleased. "I think it's a major step forward," Arulanandam told ABC News.

Holy crap, I (ALLEGEDLY) took the Amtrak a couple of years ago to Seattle and (ALLEGEDLY) packed a .45 in my luggage. Didn't even know that wasn't allowed.
    Ooops.

So you just admitted to breaking Federal Law?

      Didn't you mean a friend of a friend's cousin's brother?

Do you guys realize what a PIA it is to check baggage on AmTrak? I had no idea there was a prohibition on firearms either. I hate using Amtrak, but I have in the past and have never ever checked baggage before.

I didn't know it was an issue to cary a gun on amtrack untill this whole issue got brought up with congress.

I actually thought that since you were on railroad land (private property) the whole time you actually had less restrictions than usual....

The stupidest one is, you can't pack on GRAYHOUND!!!

            Grrr.

The few times I've had to take a bus between Phoenix and Tucson, I take those el cheapo shuttles. Even though I don't speak Spanish . They're totally in-state (Arizona) and I can just do my normal AZ CCW thing . (Given how long my legs are they usually give me "shotgun" not knowing in a pinch I can take that position pretty damn seriously...OK, 357 instead of a shotty but still...)

amtrak is great on the east coast. i travel to various cities between CT and baltimore on it all the time wen i fly out there on biz. no security check, few weather delays, cafe car. just wish i could smoke some cigars too.

you should try the trains in switzerland. guys walk on an off with their uncased Sig fully auto rifles on their way to/from reserve training. they just plop then in the overhead rack...wild the first time i saw it.

That's a company policy. There is no federal prohibition against guns on motor carriers. They can require it to be in checked baggage, securely packaged, or surrendered to the driver for the duration of the trip.

It appears they just choose not to deal with it at all.
"Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive." - Westbrook Pegler

and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Amtrak prohibition also just policy too?
False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.

You are correct, firearms are currently prohibited in their baggage policy.
