If a LEO or a person in the military who had legally obtained an assault weapons permit either retires or resigns their position but continues to reside in Ca.

What happens to the AW permit or rifle? Do they have to dispose of it or is the reg good forever?

If they separate service, the MAWP is no longer valid.

Only retiring cops with LEO AW *registrations* get to keep their AWs.

The rifle would have to be moved outside of CA. If not banned by name, it could be retained by converting to a CA-compliant OLL configuration.
