I heard on NPR this morning that Kevin Deleon, the idiot who constructed AB 962, is trying to become the California Speaker! Can anyone verify this, and if so what can we do to stop it?!?!

I don't think it'll happen, I believe it's gonna be John Perez from LA, and Perez already has the semi-formal support in place.

Perez is Antonio Villaraigosa's cousin.

There is much back room dealing going on for the speakership:

Upward mobility: Freshman Assemblyman , the openly gay Los Angeles Democrat, is on the verge of becoming the state's next Assembly speaker for one very big reason.

Meaning, Perez already has a reputation as a hard-charging fundraiser and political operative - roles that the current speaker, Karen Bass, has largely eschewed.

Early on, the front-runner to replace Bass looked to be another Southern Californian, Assemblyman Kevin de Leon of Los Angeles, a protege of former Speaker Fabian NezFelipe Fuentes

Tough to say what the outcome will be ...I'm not sure I'm buying Perez's handlers' come-from-behind story yet. They are in a full court press to convince the media and everyone listening that he has this wrapped up.

Having a Speaker from a non-rural part of the state isn't good for gunnies, period.
