More US Gun Shops Close Amid Fears of Federal Sales Record Scrutiny

Not news to us in the SF bay area, but, it is an interesting article, especially the quote:

"It's out of control. There is no responsibility. There is no accountability. There is a problem in the neighborhoods in this country with the drastic proliferation of guns," said Joseph J. Vince Jr., former chief of ATF's firearms division...

This guy which is now a consultant sounds like he is trying to create sound bytes so that he can get more work across the country.

427 errors in a gun shop quite frankly scares the hell out of me. Who did they go to? Was he selling them at a flea market? In a back alley? Hopefully not but no one knows for sure.

I am sure if they had an up to date point of sale system( not paper based) and they were an honest shop, these types of things would happen less and these folks would not be shut down.

422 errors is very easily explainable.

Think about it: one employee who thinks you're supposed to fill out "revolver" or "pistol" in place of "handgun" on the acquisition log counts as an error, each time it happens. But if you get down to it, doing so is actually far more specific than "handgun".

The media loves to latch onto the raw numbers, without caring what they signify.

I hear what you are saying and it would be garabge if they are getting shut down because of that.

I still do think that if the sales process was more automated, it would cut down the number of errors.

+1. I've bought and traded legally (before I moved to the PRK) without an FFL many times.

Yep I hear ya but that is not how guns are sold today.

Shutting shops down for making mistakes like what Gram had mentioned is just plain stupid but if they are selling out of the back of a van, I say put the screws to them.

That IS precisely how guns are STILL SOLD all over America...every day in most of free America. Guy buys a new gun from an FFL...shoots it, hates it..and sells it it to someone else---no background check, no nothing; And then 25 YEARS later the FFL gets closed down because the guy wrote pistol where the caliber should have been. Sorry...I aint buying the crude. Its BAD policy and its a blight that they're treating FFL'rs this way.

You WOULD get me to go along with the closures IF they proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the FFL was willingly and knowingly providing the means for criminals to get guns, selling to crackheads, selling to minors...etc. Short of that thought we're just one more foot or so down that slippery slope.........
