Taking a gun on a trip questions.

Well im going on a trip from San diego to Tahoe on a snowboardingi trip in a couple weeks and im thinking about taking either a handgun or a shotgun with me for the SHTF scenario. Now I know that your only supposed to travel to the shooting range and back witht the handgun. Is there any legal way for me to take a handgun with me. Would it be easier to just take the shotgun? And besides keeping ammo seperate and the guns locked is there any other legalities that i should be concerned about? Thanks in advance for the responses

You can take a handgun from any legal place to any legal place. Your hotel or rental is a valid temporary residence where you can have a handgun.

Just follow the unloaded and locked transport rule for handguns and have fun.

Yes you can take your handgun with you. You are going to the Dayton range to target shoot. It is a nice free County range about 15 minutes east of Carson City on highway 50. make a right turn at the county dumps. Mike

do these same rules apply to out of state? (ie. I want to take my SAIGA to utah for a week. As long as it's in an FAA approved, locked container, I shouldn't have a problem right?)
either start being proactive or leave the state. The longer you're here, and waiting for bills to pass, the less rights you will have.

Wow that was fast thanks for the response. I was also curious about if there any other rules you may know about if I were to get lost and end up in another state while?

NRA/ILA's site has the out of state angle covered.

Check here for a clickable map:

For the most part, neighboring states seem to be LESS restrictive when it comes to transporting handguns.

You dont even need to say you are going to a range.....a hotel or even a campsite is treated as your home in regards to possession. All you are doing is taking it from one of your homes to another in the eyes of the law.

Oh, and IIRC, wasn't it that you had to be transporting to a specific place? Not home/range only, but you could take it other places, just so long as you weren't cruising around with a pistol in the car?

Yes. You can take it to a friends house for show and tell...or repair....etc..etc....there are a multitude of options here...if someone is not bright enough to verbalize a valid reason I dont think they should be owning a gun....
