    online buying question

hello, i introduced myself earlier today, but i had a question about buying a handgun.
im looking to possibly purchase a handgun online, but im not sure about the laws or what kind of things i have to do to get this gun? i did read that it has to be send to a firearms dealer, but what do i do as far as the handgun safty coarse? do i take the test first or do i order the gun and when it arrives take the test, also the same with the background check and 10 day waiting period?

then today i was talk to a friend whos dad is a sheriff and has guns that he "trades" and sells on occasion, what do i do for transfer for the handgun training coarse, handgun permit and would there be a waiting period as well?

any info at all for the first time buyer would be greatly apreciated. thank you.

you need one a HSC card and need to be 21. Also there are handguns for sale on this forum, but you will also notice that they are transferred to an FFL where there is a waiting period and all that stuff.

Lots of questions. Lets address one at a time.

      1. Before you start buying guns online make sure you can buy a handgun in the first case. You must be 21 to purchase a handgun from a dealer. You must also have an HSC. You can take the HSC at anytime as long as you have it when you start to fill out the paperwork(DROS) the gun. When buying a handgun you will also be asked to present a proof a residence, besides your California Drivers License (such as a utility bill, residential lease, property deed, or government-issued identification, vehicle registration).

If you are unsure if you can own or posses firearms you can file the following form to check your eligibility.

In CA you can only buy handguns from a dealer that are on the "roster" So before you order a gun online make sure it is on the roster. Peace Officers are exempt from this, although from a statistics standpoint I will assume you are not a peace officer, and therefore not exempt.

Once you find a gun you want you need to find a dealer, commonly referred to as an "FFL", not all FFL's are willing to do these type of transfers. As these are usually guns coming from out of state it puts a bit of extra work on the dealers end. That being said a dealer may charge any amount they wish for this type of transfer. CA regulates prices for other types of transfers; mainly those between two resident of the state who are present in the same location. Inter-state or remote transfers however are not regulated, pursuant to price that is.

After your gun comes in you will have to wait ten days from when you fill out the paperwork to when you can pick it up.

In all honesty, unless the gun you are looking for is some rare model, you are better off just buying it straight from a local dealer, unless you have a dealer in the area who offers cheap transfers. Some dealers charge $100 or more for a transfers, although I have seen some as low as $60 (including the 25$ DROS fee).

There is nothing wrong with buying guns online, although just remember that they must be on the roster if you plan to import them.

      Welcome to Calguns!

You think you know, but you have no idea.

^^^pretty much sums it up. PPT are only worth it if its a rare gun, good deal or if you want to bypass the "roster" it get guns that are not on the roster such as AR/AK Pistols ect...

when you select an ffl for receiveing make sure he will accept from a private party. if the oline seller insists on shipping from his ffl you open anothr can of worms (this is usually a deal killer) with doj registration. you may have to get a 3rd party ffl to complete the transaction.
BTW, there will be a quiz later.
