    Help me respond to my anti-friend's email

    We had "the talk" some months ago but he didn't go for any of the usual stuff I tried to tell him about with regards to gun control. Nothing is likely to work on this good friend of mine, but I need a little help. Figured we'd agreed to disagree until tonight when I found this in my inbox (sent to 6 or 8 other friends as well).

    "Gentlemen, this guy is why I believe in gun control."


    So, now I need a decent response that won't scare or belittle him, but one that will help him realize sensationalized photos found online aren't representative of the people who should own guns. A response that might also let the others know he really isn't playing fair or for real.

    What is he into? Hobbies, interests, ect...?

    Once we find something he can relate to, we can go from there.

      Heck, that pic is the exact reason why we should abolish gun control! Do you want that perv running around armed to the teeth while the rest of us cower in fear that he might point any of his guns at us (including the one under his skibbies)!

        He's a civil engineer who's into dirt biking and hanging out like anyone else. Some of the others are engineers as well. All are mid-late 20 something college grads.

              I think the best way to approach this is to remind him that, as weird as this picture may be, the guy isn't hurting anyone, nor is he posing a danger to anyone or anything (note the proper usage of trigger discipline). Ask him why exactly this picture would be in any way, shape, or form indicative of the benefits of gun control.

              On the other hand...he may have meant his comment to be pretty tongue in cheek. In which case, if reply with a long, serious email, you may do nothing but fall into the 'annoying friend obsessed with guns' category. A flippant reply that what "Insert name of friend here" does in his own house is his business might be appropriate.

                  You're absolutely right. It surely was meant as a bit of a gag in a way, and that's why I'm a bit stumped at coming up with a brief, clever, and relevant response. I don't want to end up looking more weird or start a pi**ing match, just need a little jab to let them all know what CNN and ABC aren't telling them.

                          I would tell him some people feel a calling and a duty to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors, just like the police do. Just because he doesn't see the need for guns doesn't mean there isn't one. The only thing that keeps us from being told what to do, like in other countries, is the fact that we are armed and will only put up with so much. Remind him that he is lucky to have a friend like you that is willing to fight for the rights of the people to be able to defend themselves, their families, and their neighbors. If he can't see that, let it go. You can be friends without seeing eye to eye on everything.

                          If he keeps sending you BS like this pic. be honest and say hey, I don't appreciate that and if he continues to not respect you than you know what kind of "good friend" he is. If he respects you than just keep being a responsible gun owning role model.

                          If the pic. is just a joke don't get your panties in a bunch just reply with his face pasted over the top of this guys face and send it to those 8 other guys that received this one.

                            This is the best shot an Engineer could do? I expected better from a college grad. Let us take the picture in question. All groups of people that share a common interest are going to have a small percentage of that group that are a bit off kilter. To throw up a picture of one whack-a-loon and paint the entire gun culture as nut jobs is disingenuous at best. Besides the fact that the guy pictured isn't doing anything dangerous or illegal. Although, I'm not happy having to carry that image around in my head. To top it off, look at the site he got the picture from pictureisunrelated.com. The premise being that things in the photograghs shown are not related to each other. Using his argument we should ban dirt bikes because they cause premature aging.

                            Same site, different photo. This is a Fallacy of Causation.

                            If he can handle reading some facts have him look at these two.

                            Perhaps you want to get your ducks in a row prior to debating the matter with him. I recommend reading this for starters.
