    Handgun transfer: legal advice wanted.

Hello, everyone. Long-time reader, first-time poster.

I was wondering about the legality of the following transaction. My mother has a semi-automatic, centerfire handgun currently not on the DOJ approved list (STI Trojan). She is currently a resident of Oregon. If, on my next trip up there, she were to give me the handgun and I drove it back down here to CA, have I committed a crime?

As I understand the law, an "intrafamilial" transfer between a mother and her son is exempt from any face-to-face FFL PPT transfers, am I correct? If this is legal, is there anything more that I need to do?

I'd like to thank everyone in advance for their help.

From what I gather, the transfer is ok if your mother is a California resident. If not, the firearm must be transferred using an FFL in California, which would require that the handgun be on the certified list since the transfer is not a face to face PPT. There is an exemption for LEOs and C&R pistols.
