    I'm shocked!

Shocked that the truth made an appearance in the LA times.

Long before there was any drug trade coming north, Mexicans were buying guns in the US and smuggling them back to Mexico - Mexicans outside of any criminal intent want to be able to protect themselves like anyone else.

Back in the 50's-60's, you'd hear about someone being arrested on either this side or the Mexican side of the border with a load of firearms, and there wasn't any "cartel" of anything to sell the guns to - they were destined for the closets of people who wanted a rifle or handgun and couldn't get it legally.

Prohibition didn't work any better than it does now, the only difference being the character of the individual getting the weapon and using it.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

I have no doubt that they are getting guns from us

Because they can. It will cost them more and have higher risk, but there are many weapons that they cannot get from the various military agencies they normally steal from. I'm talking civilian marketed weapons like the Desert Eagle or Smith X-frames. These toys have zero military value, but lots of appeal to an industry that has lots of cash and needs to sell an image to maintain credibility.

Take a peek at the weapons comparison they offer, though, which includes the Barrett 50 cal rifle on the side of the drug dealers.

Why they'd have that and the Mexicans not is beyond me, but it's really irrelevant because the gun is not playing a major role (if any) in the drug dealer's arsenal.

I just opened the paper and saw the front page article with a picture of a round of .223 and a .50BMG.

What a bunch of BS. Do the writers know that a round of .50BMG is like $8-$10 a round?

I don't doubt that the police are out gunned. They are.

I bet they have AK's and other .30 caliber waepons.

This is just PROPOGANDA, so the sheep can feel good about a gun and ammo ban.

has anyone tried to get primers lately? Out-Of-Stock. Ammo-Out-Of-Stock. firearms-Out-Of-Stock. Feels like a gun ban to me.

This doesn't make any sense to me... I thought Mexico banned normal citizens from owning guns. By California's standards, it is the safest country in North America.

I think it was an ad. The LA Times is getting desperate.

Seriously, notice how somehow the nasty, evil Gringos from the USA are forced to smuggle their evil weapons into Mexico by way of Central America when there's the equivalent of the Ho Chi Minh Trail between my local Home Depot and Mexico City.

It is simply incredible how little thinking goes on at the LA Times.
